Atrial fibrillation (A-fib) ECG / EKG interpretation, treatment, causes, and nursing review for nurses, nursing students, and NCLEX.

Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common rhythms you'll encounter in a hospitalized patient. With this rhythm, the atria are contracting rapidly and at an irregular rate (very erratic). The atria are basically quivering, which increases the risk of a blood clot developing, which could lead to a stroke.

On an ECG strip, you'll notice that P waves are not present before the QRS complex. Instead, the P waves are replaced with irregular fibrillatory waves (also called F waves or fibrillary waves).

QRS complexes are present and measure less than 0.12 seconds, and the ventricular rate is irregular.

Many things can cause atrial fibrillation, such as heart problems (mitral valve disease, CAD, myocardial infarction, pericarditis, sleep apnea, and more).

Treatment can vary depending on whether the patient is stable or unstable, as well as the type of atrial fibrillation (controlled or uncontrolled). Sometimes an ablation is used in addition to other treatments such as synchronized cardioversion and anticoagulant medications.

nurse Sarah, you are one in a million. You made my nursing program easier for me. All through nursing school I used your videos for all my lectures and exams. When I was preparing for my nclex, your videos were the only lecture I used. I passed my nclex on the first try, the computer shut me off at 86 questions. And now I am an RN BSN nurse. Thank you so very much. I wish I could pay to you the money for my tuition which I gave it my nursing school for free 👍👍👍👍👍

I’ve just had Afib 2 weeks ago and it woke me up at 0530 AM and I was admitted to the ER 4 hours later and sat in there until 1500 hours and the ambulance transferred me to another hospital and I stayed in there 3 days and my room was right across from the nurse’s station where I was being closely monitored by the nurses since I was in the CTU or known as cardiothoracic unit. This is the 3rd time I’ve had Afib since last year when it first started and I’m currently 30 years old. I’ve been prescribed a CPAP machine which helps with Afib and I’ve had an IV of Cardizem when I was in the hospital. I currently take Flecainide and Metoprolol to keep the Afib under control and I just had a follow up a few days ago and got my blood drawn and my lab results came back normal. I’m going to see my cardiologist next Wednesday for a follow up and again in December.

I read my book and then watched this video. The book made it so complicated but you put it in such a organized fashion. thank you so much! Is your experience in ER or ICU? You have a good understanding of the care.

I'll stab
A rate 250-300
HR 100
5 second strip.
Nice amplitude on QRS its duration is good. Good ventricular contractions. As long as the leads were placed accurately. 🤨

Keep it up, dear. Are F waves manifestations of atrial fibrillation?
