Here's How Tesla Plans To Change Its Repair Wait Times

For Tesla owners, having an accident in their car has always been a frustrating experience -- not only because their prized car gets damaged, but also because of the length of time it's historically taken their car to get repaired.

Now Tesla says it's tackling that problem by opening its own accident repair centers. But who's to blame for the wait in the first place -- and what will Tesla's own repair centers do for it and its customers?

Tesla is addressing a problem it has caused itself. Whether they are actually solving it is another question entirely. You can't magically make parts appear. They have to be produced, warehoused, distributed, installed. Tesla's existing service infrastructure is not yet up to the task of maintaining the fleet and will be hard-pressed to do better as it grows. It seems unlikely they could be just handed a new job and improve on their record.

One of the hindrances to the traditional body shop is Tesla's aluminum skin. Very few shops are trained in dealing with aluminum. A whole new skill set and requiring different and more expensive tools. The same holds true with BMW and their carbon fiber body parts.

I was talking to an insurance Loss assessor a couple of days ago, He was telling me he has written off Tesla's with quite minor damage due too long repair times, he described dealing with the approved repair shops as a complete joke. If this carries over to the model 3 i can imagine it being a major put off to sales. Also servicing and repair cost are stupidly expensive. This is in the uk by the way.

That seems like a very honest assessment, well done

If the problem is at the outside shop for waiting for the part how is bringing it in-house going to change the fact that Tesla doesn't have a part? I mean they're trying to ramp up production so what do you want to do get parts for repair or put together a new car that you can sell for money

Our MX had a relatively minor side-swipe while parked a few months after owning it. It took 2.5 months to repair at a Tesla certified 3rd party shop. After the rental car coverage expired, Telsa gave us a MS loaner car. This change is necessary if they want to keep customers in a few years time, when relatively comparable options start coming to market.

However, given that in 2012 the average cost to insure a car was about $815. Paying $840 a year (post accident, after it went up) for a new 75D MX with $250k/$500k/$100k coverage doesn't seem bad at all...

I had a minor crash in my Model S. The local Tesla Service Center either had all the parts on hand or could get them in a day. I am able to work on my own car. I've always worked on my own cars, including the S. The only things that Tesla would balk at would be selling me parts that could only be installed using specialized tools and techniques without compromising safety; for example, a quarter panel or internal battery components.

Starting a new car Company is a bit of a job, there are so many things to look after like you will not belive so Tesla is doing its best and the time has now come to address this problem, thumbs up to Tesla!.
So lets be realistic and not point to Tesla all the time give them credit for a creating 1.000s of new jobs and creating a wonderfull car in the process. 👍

We can’t provide the parts so lets do repairs in-house because the parts will magically produce themselves. Don’t look here, look there. Tesla, the master of deflection.

Some planets, doors, bumpers ect if paint matched at factory are like you say short time repair items via a swap. So mobile service can swap out in Les than an hour in a driveway. The damage level to parts may mean an in house repair and re-entry to inventory if the part is salvageable. This will be a cost saving as well as time saving.

They would cut the wait time down if they had some regional Tesla spares warehouses for quicker dispatch,
As sending things from America to anywhere else always is either expensive or takes forever...

Personally, I'm amazed at how cheap our BMW i3 was to insure. With its carbon fiber chassis/crash protection structure, I was expecting it to be as expensive as a Tesla or even more. But it was *CHEAPER* to insure than our ancient 2004 Prius! (Switching from the Prius to the i3 with the exact same coverage had our insurance go *DOWN* by $30 / 6 months. Yes, were were almost certainly over-covering the Prius.)

For sure repairs in Tesla dealership will be cheaper than in 3rd party shop ;-)

Most minor dings don't need you to replace the panel, you can just get it panel beaten. Does Tesla allow that, or do you actually have to replace the whole panel?

I would prefer Tesla to get it's repair stock up to spec and don't let the shops wait for months. They create the problem and now will fix it in a way that would make it even harder for many businesses to work on a Tesla car. I also don't think having your car fixed by Tesla would be that much cheaper. I would assume that given the issues of profitability and outstanding debt, Tesla would prefer to make bigger profits instead of lowering prices for their customers.

No one wants to be gouged on price but this is a great revenue stream for Tesla as body repairs will be needed for quite some time. I think they should invest more in this business model.

Can you suggest to Tesla, they also provide the rental car? More money for them.

Inhouse is the way to go. As long as I get a Tesla loaner I am happy. Driving a newer car meanwhile is just great. One day or one week doesn’t matter.

Without having after market parts one will be always hooked to a single source.. Tesla. Now, Tesla offering insurance, repairs, and expensive parts (only)? A bit rich don't you think? The Electric car wars will determine if and who will survive. Yearly costs of running a car will ultimately decide all.
