Welcome to my series 'Top Five' where I countdown the top five of a particular topic in the Progressive Rock (and related) genre! These topics are selected by my wife, and the idea is that these are the top five that come immediately to mind, with very little preparation.
Today's topic is the top five modern Prog concept albums! Tell me down in the comments, did I forget your favorite? What would your top five list look like?
Since my wife chooses the topics each week, please leave any suggestions you might have for future top fives in the comments below as well!

The two modern Prog concept albums which blew my head off as a teenager and which I still love today are Marillion's "Brave" and Aragon's "Mouse".

Some good choices, Nathan. And there is always the question of what qualifies as a concept album. Like can an instrumental album be a concept album? Anyway, here's a quick attempt at a list of personal favorites.

1. Only Human - Lee Abraham
2. Not of This World - Pendragon
3. The Murder Wall - Kaprekar's Constant
4. The Whirlwind - Transatlantic
5. The Red Planet - Rick Wakeman
HM Scenes From a Memory - Dream Theater

Hi Nathan. Dave here. A great list of yours, although as I've said before the music comes before the concept for me. Based on albums I own, I'm with you on Snow (Spock's Beard), Acts IV & V (The Dear Hunter), Aquarius (Haken), Scenes from a Memory (DT) and Hand.Cannot.Erase (SW). On Neal Morse, the album I know and love is Testimony, but I need to check out Similitude. A few I would add are Seven (Magenta), Subterranea (IQ) and Illinois (Sufjan Stevens).

Hi Nathan, I see the fabulous band Lalu are releasing a new album on 20th October entitled "The Fish Who Wanted to be King". Great news and more or less the same line-up as with the 2022 album "Paint the Sky". Downes Braide Association new album 'Celestial Songs' is released on 8th September. Lot to look forward to!

Everyone's gotta try "The Visitor" by Arena. Stunning! But nothing beats the MASSIVE double shot of Neal Morse's "Similitude of a Dream" and its sequel "The Great Adventure." Those are the very definition of epic. Glad to see that Neal was on your list!

Great show, fantastic albums. You all ready mentioned The Chronicles of father Robin (the mother of all modern prog concept albums), I would like to mention two great concept albums from 2023 Free Human Zoo - The Mysterious Island and Pewman - Crónica Musical de Vicente Cau Cau. Cheers and all the best from new_dawn_of_prog.

Very cool to see Brave on here!

surprised Snow didn't make it, but with Similitude, I can follow why you may not have both.

dozens of albums could be chosen, but here's basically my top 5.

1. Marillion - Brave
2. Kevin Gilbert - The Shaming of the True
3. Apes & Androids - Blood Moon
4. dredg - El Cielo
5. Fates Warning - A Pleasant Shade of Gray

You know I've been thinking about this question all evening and that's a tough question as it changes from time to time. So with that being said as of right now there's a few that are very intriguing to me and sound like they can, and are getting better and better "new" bands on a monthly basis....not in any particular order.
DBA... Hearing great things about there upcoming album.
Rocking horse music club.... Quirky at times but have great potential!
Big big train... Very anxious to see where Alberto will take them!!
Nine Skies.... They are really growing on me.... I just wish they'd stick with one lead vocals... I think they would really take off... Just my opinion.
Lifesigns.... Another one that's really growing on me... Great vocals!!
Mystery.... Man I really wish they would do a North American tour! seeing some concert videos of them they look like a band that I would enjoy seeing in person!!
Dim Gray.... My own personal opinion... Potential Superstars!!

Last one is one that I wish would do a concept album because I really like them! The Pineapple thief... I only want to hear one album just to see what it would sound like with Gavin on the kit!! ✌️

Ok i'm cross with myself...I have 700 prog and rock cds and another couple of hundred vinyl...and I can honestly say I love the music and vocals but don't have a clue on what any of them are about...lol...I write and record too and have my own music on spotify...but now feel like i'm missing something...😂😂 what am I like! 47 years old and never thought to dig into what the hell all this beautiful music is about...maybe its cos im always twiddling the desk and mixing and recording that I somehow forgot to look into this 🤔

My list would also include Ayreon - almost any of the albums could make my list. Spocks Beard - Snow would also be there. A couple less well known which are favourites of mine - Ritual - The Hemulic Voluntary Band (based around the Moomintroll books of Tove Jannson), and Gandalf's Fist - The Clockwork Fable

Interesting choices. DT definitely for me. I'd consider Tick Tock by Gazpacho and the mind-blowing Be by Pain of Salvation
