iPad may not be the main device replacement for everyone but it sure does help as a secondary device

As a teacher, and just like your tattoo artist friend, there’s no other computer that’d get my job done the way the iPad does it. Ever since I learned it could be hooked up to a projector and I could use GoodNotes as my digital board, it completely changed the way I work for the better. That was years ago on an iPad Air 2; now it’s only gotten better with iPadOS being more fleshed out. But I agree with you that some of the features feel frustratingly half-baked when they release, the more egregious example being Stage Manager on an external monitor still not working properly.

iPad is a boon for me as a medical student (mbbs) since I don't have use of laptop. I can take notes, have my books with me all the time. Can watch YouTube, movies, and can play games. It's amazing. Best product from apple. ❤

For note taking as a college student, the iPad is gamechanging when combined with the Apple Pencil. However, I’d much rather do most academic tasks (running stats, creating PowerPoints, writing papers, etc.) on a laptop.

If you own a mac of any kind, I recommend going with the cheapest, lowest gen, and possibly refurbed ipad. I never thought I needed an ipad, but for a couple hundred bucks my gen 8 is now my 1) kindle 2) mobile secondary monitor 3) sheet music stand and 4) occasional hand-written note-taking device

Whoever says macOS should come to the iPad should be getting a Mac. iPadOS is not only fine, it’s the best OS for the iPad, it’s meant for mobility and simplicity, if your “Pro” workflow needs macOS to work, then get a Mac, there’s no need for a touch screen or pen support.

My partner went back to university this fall and only had a 2017 MBA. Was a no-brainer to just tell her to get an M1 iPad Air with the pencil for note taking and everything else. iPad really excels at productivity tasks

I use my iPad for digital art, note taking, writing, and media consumption. I got it mostly for digital art and consuming media, but I’ve expanded the usage quite a bit. At one time, I thought I could use it as my sole device. Eventually though, I bought a MacBook for tasks that are more comfortable on a laptop. Though I still mainly use my iPad, I’m happy to have both and have them talk to each other quite easily.

The file storage system remains my biggest barrier to full access of my Apple ecosystem. It's been a couple of years since I switched from PC OSs and I have a decent sense of how Finder works, but on my iPad, I find it beyond unintuitive and confusing. It clashes with my learning disability bigtime, and was part of why I went with Windows and Linux.

I use my Mini 6 and for everything from content consumption to presentation creation to medical documentation and ordering. It’s easily my favorite piece of tech.

As a student, I’m still currently using the iPad Pro 9.7 from 2016. I used it as my only computer until 2020, and it’s definitely outdated but for my use case I find myself bringing it more than my laptop since it’s lighter for the commute as well as better for reading, taking notes and viewing pdfs. That being said, should this iPad break I would probably end up buying a Macbook Air since it can do everything the ipad can except handwritten notes, and the iPad lineup is currently messy for me. If I upgrade to a 10th gen iPad I’m scared that it would be outdated sooner but the Air is too pricey

for someone that wants something smaller than a laptop bigger than a phone for taking notes, making documents, simple calls and everything in between that, makes the iPad honestly perfect for me

I just traded a M1 12.9 for an M2 11. I wanted the smaller size minus the keyboard for a more traditional experience. I'll leave the heavy lifting for my 14" MBP. I wish Apple would introduce a Wacom like mode where I could use it with my MBP for note taking and photo editing. An input mode for the Mac if you will.

I love my iPad Air 4th gen. It can basically do anything I need. I can make music, edit videos and photos, make notes and prepare for shooting a video. I use it as a prompter aswell. It has everything you really need. You’ll need laptop if there is a specific program that is not available on iPad.

I used a 11 iPad Pro for 3 years 1 tb, 16gbs of ram and could not be happier. Wrote, edited in Lightroom in it, and was happy until my external hdd's became unusable. Thing is that due to the file system that does not to expel the disk before disconnecting they began corrupting until they became unusable. Fortunately most of my photos were backed up in one way or another. The iPad is now a travel device and am using the new Mac book pro 14 m3 as my main machine now.

I agree with your premise. I use my iPad 10th gen primarily for content consumption. When I'm traveling it works great as a second monitor for my M1 MBP 14 using universal control, but I won't be trying to replace my MacBook with it.

I’m using iPad Pro 3 years and its fully replaced my MacBook. I work with music distribution and all I need is ok with tablet. I can edit 4K music videos, wav audio, even edit album covers with my Apple Pencil. It’s on Bionic, but still very powerful and I’m planning to buy a new iPad Pro in one year because very first restriction I found is Death Stranding game which is “okay to be not so powerful to run it” in my opinion. In other cases my Bionic iPad Pro still fine.

Me personally, I plan to buy an 2024 iPad Pro for professional use (photo editing and video editing). Many of my close friends in my field have mentioned I should do a Mac book instead. While I believe that using a Mac book instead will definitely make my work flow easier, I have always been attracted to the iPad. The flexibility of the device kind reminds me of me.

I’m using a 2017 Mac book air so I’m due for an upgrade. I was going to purchase a new device this year, however I was stuck between MacBook and iPad. My decision fell on this thought “if i been debating whether to go laptop or iPad even with the knowledge that laptop will be easier, I should go with the choice that Will make me happier which is iPad.” Either way I will be getting a new device!

If you only do basic things like reading ebooks/magazines/newspapers, surfing the web, online shopping, mail, watching youtube/movies etc. there is no need for a computer, the iPad is perfect for that. I tried using only the iPad as a university student and the only thing I had to complain about was Notion, for example copy paste didn’t work, but I think it works now. And some things felt a bit wierd because I was used to a Mac. Also we write all of our exams on a computer and I don’t think that software runs on an iPad (but you can borrow a computer from school so it’s not really an issue). :)
