After listening to this, it strikes me that one problem tourists have is that they always seem to travel during the summer. Paris is home to millions of Parisians who live there all year long, but tourists are on summer vacation and some people cannot distinguish between the outfits one can wear at a Caribbean resort or on the Riviera from what one wears -- even in hot months -- in a large, cosmopolitan, sophisticated city. Those things you cited would be gauche in NYC too!

Absolutely research the dress code of any country you are visiting as well as the things you want to visit/see. I have seen women in micro shorts & bra tops in india & they wonder why they are frond upon in the holy cities like rikesh and Varanasi.

I love your white shorts outfit, it’s elegant and cool in both its meanings. Many Americans women get so carried away dressing super-sexy, it just isn’t classy anywhere except the beach, maybe. (I’m American, too, there are a few of us that are more modest, and I think the Parisian, elegant, Old Money, etc. trends are gradually improving making styles more appropriate here, so I welcome them).

I’m short, and very short-waisted, so many “cropped” tops cover my waistband; if they don’t I just don’t buy them. I’m a women who never to shows cleavage or skin on my torso (no bra tops or cutouts for me). If I show skin, it will be that on my legs, but even then, I keep it modest, they must end below mid-thigh (except for my exercise shorts, where I need as much coolness as possible, it gets so hot here in California). So many brands make tops and dresses far too low-cut, even in Petites and French brands, from which I mostly shop. I do have some tricks for making them cover more, though, they’re nearly always necessary for V-neck dresses on me. Straps that are too long and deep-cut clothes are my biggest style challenge, and of course, everything has to be shortened. Not all straps can be shortened, so I look for those straight-cut straps, which can be.
