Lead singer Gord Downie was a real deal genuine human being. The entire country celebrated his life and work with a final tour after it was announced he had an inoperable cancer and they joined together to mourn after his passing.
A cool thing about Gord was that he was the primary author of the majority of the songs but he shared the proceeds from the publishing with the rest of the band. Said he couldnt live with himself while he was driving a Porsche while the rest were riding 10 speeds.

I'm thinking "Wheat Kings" or "Grace Too" should be next... But there are so many great songs by The Hip. Cheers from Canada!

So true about the guitar / voice. Many years ago my friend was a fine guitar player, but he always made me sing (lol).

The Hip were the house band for the lives of all Canadians Gen Xers and many Millennials. The late Gord Downie was one of the best front "men" in the history of rock.

Their music wasn't complicated; mostly just high quality, usually hard driving blues rock, moving through the 80's, 90's and 00's. But their vibe was just incredible.

And their catalog was deep: 13 studio albums, plus 2 EP's and 2 live releases. 9 of those studio albums hit no. 1 in Canada, with 2 at 2nd and 1 at 3rd.

Beloved by their country, the Hip were also deeply appreciated by the rest of the Canadian music industry (from Rush to Neil Young to Nickleback to Gordon Lightfoot). They played their very last show in their home town of Kingston, Ontario (while Downie was suffering terminal brain cancer which would take him a year later), the whole country stopped and watched. We're talking over 1/3 of the entire population here.

I know, I know, I'm Canadian, I'm supposed to worship the Hip. I do respect them. They are a great band, but I never warmed to most of their songs. But this one, I love. Always a great listen.

🤦 Hip fans...you should know better. This band, more than any other band needs to be listened to in chronological order to understand them. When you listen to this song and then that song...you get no feeling of what this band is.(not "was")
