A gem of a lesson! Breaking it down over just two strings to simplify the concept made it so much more achievable for someone like me who is still learning all of this :) thanks again Chris!!! BTW your guitar looks lovely :)

Thanks so much for the lesson. One of the most important aspects of this lesson (and others that you have presented) is restricting the possibilities of note choices to two strings. As soon as you did that I said, "Of course!" Until then, I was quickly running the notes of the A - D - E Mixolydian in my head across all six strings.String restriction is such an important technique to reduce the the cognitive load. Thanks for the reminder!

Hi Chris,
This was a breakthrough lesson for me. I've been having a blast using these ideas to solo over the dominant 7th chords. Thanks for creating this great lesson.

Thank you Chris your lessons are too good. I really appreciate the breakdown! Really your entire lesson makeup but the breakdowns in theory specifically :)

Excellent Chris this is an absolute beauty. One thing I do every morning before work is pick a note and start and go around the circle of fifths starting on that note, if that note isn’t in the key I just go up to the next note, and this really helps prep for exercises like this to help you change keys on the fly.

When I heard the progression was A7-D7-E7, I would've thought to just play in A. I didn't realize the theory behind dominant 7ths, that they are the 5th a key. So A7-D7-E7 is really the keys of D, G, A. Thanks for the enlightenment.

Good stuff! I hope you had a fun vaca.

Next, we all have to mix it all up: play blues, arps, mixo, play as if it was 145 in the tonic's key, play penta maj over it, play penta minor over it, play chromatic bits...and we're there...or someplace happy. :)

Not only does Chris help me with music theory, he also helps me with vocabulary, ie pedantic. :-))

Thank you Chris...a subtle but very interesting change. Cheers!

I had been taught to chase chords by using the scale name of the chord (play some A scale over the A chord...). This is a really interesting alternative. Thanx Chris for another great lesson on how to use theory to guide the ear towards pleasing melodies and harmonies.

Great stuff again Chris. This is probably the missing link for me between the arpeggio notes and some shred dare I say! I also find it gives you more retention and makes the bars sound more interesting.

2 strings really simplifies this. Octaves will help expand it. More work. :)

Great video. Been trying to understand how to apply the change through approach and you made it crystal clear . I’m getting bored with my root 3 5! Could you do more examples on non blues songs ?
