Cells need energy to power the chemical reactions that keep their microscopic cities running, and most of that energy comes from a chemical called ATP. In this episode of Crash Course Biology, we’ll learn how our cells use energy, what an enzyme’s role is in chemical reactions, and what makes a reaction exergonic or endergonic.

Chapters:
Cellular Cities 00:00
What Is Energy? 1:18
The Laws of Thermodynamics 2:22
ATP 4:07
Chemical Reactions 6:42
Enzymes 9:13

As a med student, watching this brings me nostalgia from AP Bio. Unfortunately, memorizing the Krebs Cycle never seems to leave us

We just started covering enzymes in my class. This is fantastic!

Hey Crashcourse,

i have a question about the old biology- and the new biology series. How do they differ, is this more up to date and more acessible to a younger audience? Should i watch the other?

You really helped me to understand and be introduced to core biology concepts! Thankyou very much.

If energy can't be created or destroyed, where did the first energy come from?

Destruction causes a release of energy, in its most simplistic for that is heat.

it might be my existential dread speaking but this has been my biggest fear... the more we uncover about life, the more of a sick joke is seems to be... this life that is built upon such simple rules where motion is energy and energy is life... the complexer a living form is, the more intricate it's inner workings is as it tries to have the right level of mobile and unmoving parts to gain an advantage on survivability... a continual repetition of renewal, nurish, grow, age and perish (all set on the principles of trial and error)... there would be no place for conscience and cognitive thinking had it not served well in the survival of life that hold such traits... I think therefore I am, but I only think because I'm meant to -...- good grief
