I visited the Vatican archives back in the 1970’s when I was a grad student at University College Dublin and then at Oxford. I was working on some Irish annals dating from the sixth through the 13th century. Because of the many letters of early Irish monks held in the Vatican, I wanted to read them. I applied for permission, it was granted and I went to Rome. The staff was so helpful. I spoke no Italian, few of them had any English but we were all fluent in Latin. I sat in a climate controlled cubical, masked and gloved and was presented with a series of letters over 1, 000 years old. It was amazing.

When you can label places and things as classified and no one can see them but the people who made up history then you can convince people of anything. Until citizens can explore these places themselves we may never know real history and life is to short for us not to demand it now

I really like how you are not afraid to take into account even the most daring theories, but at the same time retain a certain amount of skepticism without slipping into absolute nonsense. You know the measure, and I like it. In fact, none of us knows for sure and certainly will not know the present state of affairs in the past. The facts vary too much from each other, and all the written evidence was easily forged, not to mention the fact that many people could simply be mistaken while writing them. We can only guess, but one thing is certain. History is far from being as unambiguous and simple as history textbooks are trying to tell us.🤔
