Favorite little tidbit the reason why their armor is black is the missions they do are so risky and going to result in the death of the marine most chapters paint the marines armor black before he goes and mourns their death as he departs.

there are members of the Deathwatch who never leave, black shields, for one reason or another, are chapterless and bound to their watch captain until death. it's strongly believed that most black shields are renegade or chaos Marines who went against their former groups and joined the Watch to have a chance to die in the Emperor's light

They also let in choas marines (or so i read) after they paint their armor black and renounce choas. I think theres a step or 2 more to that but i like that they do that.
