Godot FBX Just Got ALOT Better!

In the upcoming version of Godot 3.2.4 there is a new FBX importer. This isn't the Assimp version from Godot 3.2, but a completely new open source version of Assimp made specifically for Godot. In this video I will test the results with models from two popular sources, Mixamo animated characters and a scene from SketchFab.

I've been following your posts for quite a while, always great! That godot needed an fbx update is out of question. But i also prefer GLTF as exchange format.

I do not comment enough, but I really appreciate your frequent and detailed information about all-the-things related to game making!

FBX file format has scaling factors which in theory allows you to convert mesh data from one unit to another, like centimeters to meters or meters to inches without altering the original vertex data, in practice tho is just an extra headache you have to deal with because every 3D software has different configurations and presets for exporting FBX files and users are not aware of the consequences of those options. So there's nothing wrong with that second file, most likely that issue will also happen in other engines. The author simply didn't pay much attention to the export options.

Good to see that the fbx importer is being made better. That is good news. Big props to the person working on it.👍😃

Thats actually funny that the static mesh is what had issues, everytime i try to import an animated mesh as fbx I just give up

It nice to see open source software like Godot getting all these improvements. I really need to go back to playing with it. Thanks for sharing.

On the diorama, have you tried importing it to other game engine like unity or unreal? maybe the scaling issue came from the asset itself not godot. Just a suggestion.

Just use GLTF! It is so much better than FBX at this point. I only bother with the other 3D model formats for games if the engine doesn’t support GLTF importing.

There's a Root Scale variable in the import settings. There always is one.

Also super important: Scale on the inspector needs to always be 1 (and Rotation, Location on 0).
If u have any other values there's all sorts of problems when animating and when baking Lightmaps.
