By the beginning of 1946, a large number of individuals were being held at the camp, including 18,000 members of the SS and 12,000 others, such as Russian army deserters and individuals captured while wearing German army uniforms.

Tensions came to a head when plans were made to send 271 Russian deserters back to Russian-controlled territories, as had been agreed upon at the Yalta Conference. Inmates in two barracks rioted, with those in one building being cleared without much difficulty, but those in the second setting fire to the building, removing their clothes, and linking arms to resist being removed.

American soldiers used tear gas before storming the barracks, only to find that many of the inmates had committed su3cide. According to the American services newspaper Stars and Stripes, some were hanging from the rafters and begged to be sh0t. In total, 10 inmates were successful in their su3cide attempts during the riot, and 21 more attempted su3cide using razor blades. Many others were injured, including those with "cracked heads," inflicted by the 500 American guards who were attempting to regain control of the situation.

I was there in 1984 and also in Auschwitz (and Berkau) near Oświęcim, Poland. Both of these places are horrible. Auschwitz Is where Dr. Mendel did operations on live prisoners. Operations that were cruel and immoral. I knew a Catholic Priest (name was Ojćż) that taught me In highschool back in the 60’s. He told us about the 5 years he spent there and that his fellow prisoners knew that he was a priest, but never revealed him, and he survived the camp. When we were on vacation in Germany in 1984 and in Munich, we visited Dachau (called a National Historic Museum, so the sign said). We were lost looking for the place and asked a couple that was walking on the street, where it was and they said they didn’t know, shortly we found it, just 2 blocks away…..I wonder? We sat thru a horrible revelation about Dr Mendel’s operation, etc. We toured the camp, saw 2 reconstructed baracks (there were 20 originally, foundation were still there) and a building with a WC (toilet) at one end and 2 furnaces (cremation furnaces). Even 40 years after the war they still smelled of the bodies that were cremated there. I will have this image and smaell for the rest of my life. It’s horrible What Man can do to Man ………Jim
PS…..I also saw the jail cell where Saint Ks. Maximilon Kolbe was enturned and the special cell for punishment (you can only stand) and also the wall that he stood against when he was shot taking another man’s (he had a wife and kids) place. What a sacrifice, giving your life for another……

Can you blame them? (Although, many German women who had absolutely NOTHING to do with the war or were part of the Nazi party were brutalized by the Soviet soldiers.) I'd like to think these men had no part of that.
