The biggest problem with the price tag is the Mercedes Benz design language that basically doesn’t change throughout the entire range. Who wants to pay 180k for what looks like an a class convertible from the front.

£180K? The steering wheel looks like it's come from a double-decker. An SL is supposed to be sophisticated, civilised and comfortable, not 'a handful'.

Pointless unless you actually do track days. I'm 62 and like convertible sporty looking cars. The old style SL perfect for me. I live in a crowded part of the South East and road and traffic conditions mean that performance and handling just don't matter anymore because there are so few places you can put your foot down. Having said that you see plenty of unusably fast cars driven at 20, mph in the more affluent areas.

In May I sold my Z3M roadster & replaced it with a very low mileage high spec 2014 R231 SL500 in hyacinth red with cream leather for £29, 500.
Not the AMG SL63 admittedly nor this one. But not much less power or performance. It's more than enough. In fact I'm in awe of it.
Immense torque from 1800rpm twice the max torque of the M Roadster
The fact it takes an extra 200 or 300 milliseconds to reach the legal speed limit compared to the AMG is immaterial. 0 - 60 in 4.5 is fine with me. I'm loving it to bits.
I considered an SLK55. But they're almost as expensive. A great little V8 roadster, but less car for the money.
SLK55 £55k new. SL500 £85k new but only £3 or £4k more second hand for the SL. And it's an almost all aluminium engineering masterpiece so as stiff as a coupe. When I test drove the Slk55 the engine felt special. When I drive my SL500 the whole car feels special & looks lush in the colour scheme it has & it's opulent.
Shame this new 4wd one's heavier than the AGM GT convertible that has rear trans-axle.
I agree with you on new one. A fine luxury muscle car, but it's not along the lines an SL

Wait a year or 2 and it will drop in price by around 40%-50% if you really want one and have the patience to wait of course!

I would imagine you are entirely right about this and the SL - it's gone from a GT cruiser to a track car that can be driven on the roads combined with an eye-watering price tag that means it has fierce competition when it costs that much. Agree that it doesn't feel like a £174k car and high-end Mercs always depreciate terribly too.
