Many of my friends tell me this. That I’m lucky I can speak languages. That they cannot because they are not good at it. The truth is all (or almost all) is discipline. I suck in languages but I practice everyday.

I think the problem is that nowadays people want to have everything right now. Learning languages is however a long journey and if they don't see any rapid progress, they just quit. Patience and perserverance that's the key to success !

Thanks for this great video, Luca! This is such a popular excuse to say "I'm bad at languages".

I often told many people that there is no concept of "being bad at languages" but now I can just send them your video.

Watching other polyglots is a great source of motivation for me. And that was you who has shown me that high proficiency in many languages is achievable. I admire your attention to the details, especially pronunciation.

And athletic talent does not exist either...no one is talented. Just run a lot and you will be a world class sprinter. Play basketball and you will in the NBA. Why people peddle this bizarre form of modern day Cartesian dualism is beyond me, as if the mind floated off the body and therefore is not subject to the same constraints as the body. Individuals have different aptitudes. Why do some people effortless acquire a new phonology whereas others never do? Why do some people never get certain grammatical concepts? Effort is part of it but that does not explain the relative ease with which some individuals acquire certain linguistic features vs. others. Sure von nix kommt nix, i.e. effort but that there is individuated distribution of ability is as obvious as the fact that some people are tall and others are short.
