Tip Number 1: Your words are more important than your production value. MKBHD films the videos on his Auto Focus channel by just using his iphone.

You can clearly hear the wind noise, for a few seconds, but MKBHD’s voice is still easy to understand, and there’s not noticeable drop in how many people are watching, so perhaps a little bit of wind noise is perfectly fine

Tip number 2: It is ok for your voice to change in different locations. It drives me crazy that if I film some of my video inside and some outside, your voice sounds different due to the accoustic qualities of the room… doesn’t that sound fancy!

But MKBHD had this effect happen when he went inside the car, and nobody complained, so perhaps it’s time for me to let go of that obsession.

Tip Number 3 is that you don’t need any of the fancy gear, just hold your phone and get started. In this clip here you can see MKBHD’s reflection, and he’s just holding the phone and filming. No tripod, no auxillary microphone, just his iphone, that’s all you need!

Tip Number 4 is that it’s ok to go off script. This comment about the selfy stick…. this comment clearly wasn’t planned, but he kept it in, and it adds a bit of humour and interest to the video.

Tip number 5 is to acknowledge your audience feedback. In previous videos, viewers had been recommending various iphone accessories for filming, so MKBHD mentions them in this comment, making them feel heard and building rapport.

Tip number 6 is that your video does not have to always be fast paced… sometimes it’s ok to slow down. Look at this part of the video: I would have edited that out and cut to where the camera had already focused, but MKBHD left it in, and it doesn’t make the video noticeably worse

Tip number 7 is that you can still get cool shots with a bit of creativity: You can get a panning shot by leaning on your knee like this, and by utilising naturaly light and dark times, this car looks pretty impressive.

Tip number 8 is that you don’t need to scrap the video just because you made a mistake.

Before Tip 9, I make lots of videos about filming with your iphone, such as this 5-minute summary of everything that you need to know.

Tip number 9 is the zoom presets: While filming, MKBHD uses these buttons to jump between various zoom settings, this is a very effective way to change your view. Thank you, and I’ll see you in the next video.
