You may have heard that GNOME is an acronym and at one point that as certainly true but that can't be said any longer however when it was the GNU Object Model Environment it was also part of the GNU ecosystem.

"GNOME used to stand for something!"
"I know, the project has really compromised its principles."
"No, I mean the name had meaning!"
"Yeah, and now it's just a shell of its former greatness."
"You're not listening. These days GNOME just stands for GNOME."
"I know! They're just in it for themselves."

Stallman: "I wonder whether these projects are free software..."

I didn't know GNOME was no longer an acronym. I think I knew it was a gnu project, but its possible I had just assumed that without seeing facts.

Watched this on my TV last night, just today I realized. The only vestige of this is the pronunciation
Gah-noum makes sense if the Gn comes from Gnu, but not if it's just plain gnome. Like, the creature

The quest for running proprietary applications on Linux goes back to 1995. Eric Youngdale implemented the iBCS2 emulator, so that proprietary SVR4/i386 applications ran on Linux.

Many people dont know that it was Richard stallman, the founder of GNU that convinced the owners of Qt to make it free which in turn made KDE free

First, Brodie fingered the Arch logo and now, the Gnome logo. Lord knows what he'll finger next 💀

It's annoying how many dumb arguments unfold somewhat violently in the open source world. Surely there are more peaceful ways of resolving matters.

Back then I decided never to use GNOME because in my understanding it was made to kill QT and KDE and stop me from getting my work done in a way Stallman didn't approve :D

Show me the last time you saw GNU the organisation doing something productive instead of grumbling at other projects on how they should do their own sh!t
I'd keep FSFE exempt but the rest is literally stuck in 1999

This video gave me historical PTSD. I remember all this real time. 🤦🏻‍♂

I didn't know they were associated until I figured that the G in GNOME had to have stood for GNU, like most other GNU applications and projects.

I never knew GNOME had anything to do with GNU I just figured that it was developed in a vacuum and gained popularity with time

Who GNU that GNOME was started by mexicans? I didn't, really shows us how open the community really is.

It also shows us how nitpicky people can be too...
