One more reason to get rid of it, but the chance of locking you out and/or forcing an online login is the real problem. That is just unacceptable for me and should be for anyone considering how important data is today.

I used to use Windows and I loved the Windows 95, XP and Windows 7 start menu. Then when the Metro Theme came out in Windows 8, I hated it. The Windows 10 menu is no better with the Windows 11 one being even worse. That's one of the reasons I left Windows. Although I did use Classic Shell on Windows 8 which did give me the Windows 7 start menu. I found it slowed my system down and I had lots of crashes on Windows 8. Then when Microsoft stopped support for Windows 7 and 8 I switched to Linux. I am now on Linux full time and I do find the start menus much better than the ones we had on Windows. I have the Mate, Budgie, KDE and Gnome Flashback desktop each on different laptops. All of the start menus are Windows look but different styles and they work a lot better than the Windows ones. It's ironic that all of the features we know and loved in Windows 7 including the start menu are now gone in Windows 11. Yet on Linux we lots of nice desktops most of which provide the traditional start menu and other things lost to us on Windows. Well Windows 11 is not Windows anymore. Windows 7 is gone and it's never coming back. Time to move on to Linux which is much better.

Oh! how do I celebrate that I moved to Linux. Nothing Microsoft left here . .

Windows is cutting edge, they are ahead of their time with the picture menu. They are planning for the near future when most Americans are illiterate.

As a IT vet of 25+ years... The windows 10 Start menu Is far more configurable than you have shown here.
I have moved the long list to the back with a toggle to the Tiles.
And then I have Common Applications grouped (Office, Internet, Control)
This is quite intuitive for experienced users as well as new users

Now the windows 11 ... at the very start was a complete cluster... and even after the update was only a slightly less cluster.
All these grievances, Myself and many others presented in the beta testing.

Microsoft just need to bite the bullet and create a Mobile Interface and a Desktop interface and stop trying to find a happy medium.

Windows died with 7, I still run it on one laptop. For a short time, I had another laptop with 8.1, replacing the start mess with Softonic Classic Shell before ultimately dumping everything for linux.

Every time Microsoft mess with the Start menu they muck it up and upset their customers. How dim are they? Just leave it alone.

So glad I dumped Windows over a month ago as my daily driver. I only have Windows on a 250GB SSD now to dual boot into to use the one app that doesn't have a good Linux alternative, which is to rip my BluRay discs I own to put onto my Plex Media server. I've tried mkmkv and handbrake, but they just don't compare to my Windows app I purchased which also uses my CUDA cores to help with ripping the videos from my BluRay discs that I own.

My 2TB NVME is completely dedicated to Linux.

All I know is that these "modifications" are there for patch Tuesday to reset your settings unannounced, and have everything Microsoft has been pushing for activated in the background, without your consent.

Windows phones had a very nice UI. Best at the time, IMO, and they had replaceable back plate, had a removable battery, a headphone jack, and were back heavy, so they landed on the back side instead of the screen. Too bad they didn't stick around for long.

Maybe I'm just a heathen here but I actually really liked Windows 10's menu. Then again, I liked Windows 10 in general. I really don't like Win11 at all (including the cluttered menu)

Also, why the hell does Windows keep trying to copy Gnome in the worst way possible? If I want gnome, I'm just going to use Gnome! Microsoft has a weird tendency to take a feature that's cool on another OS and completely ruin it for their own...

The "New" start menu in Windows is reminiscent of the user interface design found in iOS.
A question about the accessibility of the "New" start menu, whether it can be navigated using the keyboard only.

I like choice, and Linux got plenty of it. Free yourself from the prison that is Windows!

Imagine using a start menu. This post was made by dmenu gang.

I already use StartIsBack / StartAllBack because the last time Windows made a good start menu was Windows 7.

Most important in regard to the Cinnamon/KDE 'start menu', you can just hit the Windows-key, start typing and the program will pop up, press enter and it starts.
Not how I use the PC (I use dwm) but there you have it, it works just as how you was used to it on Windows.

Completely agree. Microsoft should give us options for Start Menu and Taskbar lay-outs. I have been saying this ever since the Windows 8 abomination.
If they made this stuff customizable, a large category of the problems people have would evaporate.

I use Open Shell on Win 11 and it recreates a two column Win 7style menu that works for me.

Once I found the search feature in Win10 I stopped using the menu entirely. Still running 10 on one machine now, and I have no idea what's in the menu. Can't imagine getting worked up over it.
