Goldie is such a wonderful fully realised creation, especially as she’s really just a side character there to convince Columbo not to give up when all the evidence says Bo is just away on business. They didn’t need to write or portray anyone with any depth but you can imagine her as a real person.

One of the top episodes IMHO and all credit to Peter Falk for his directorial debut in this one too.

Goldie was the highlight of this episode.

So many great Columbo episodes. So hard to decide which was the best. That's how great the original Columbo series were.

O'Neal was such a good villain. He was very smart, he had contempt for Columbo, but in the end he knows when he's been beaten by Columbo's superior intellect.

The killer leaving the radio in his victim’s car tuned to the classical music station was either peak arrogance or peak stupidity.

Never go where the killer wants you to go, in this case the barn. Fight for your life in the car. Once in the barn, you're toast.

This was a great episode, Columbo looked at first that he had got it wrong about the body being buried in the concrete pillar. But of course he wasn't fooled, and later he solved the case with his dogged determination.

As someone who has viewed the entire episode, what I find "confusing" is how a "very hungry architect" could refuse the generous offer of half a Mounds bar from Columbo, especially when he knew Columbo also had RAISINS. I'm telling ya, it's loose ends like that drive me crazy 🤔

Apparently the scene where the tire blows was originally written for S1 E1, “Murder by the Book, ” but it was cut to get the episode down to 90 minutes. It would have helped explain Columbo’s obsession with why Franklin drove from San Diego rather than flying—as well as his “drive carefully” comment to Franklin when he went back to his cabin (to kill the witness).

Love the mixed metaphor! 😊

Peter Falk directed this episode & although it had an uneven pace (the whole shebang about digging up the pile goes on for a long time), it's superbly acted all the way.

Janice Paige ("Goldie") looked super in this Columbo episode. She had a way about her that warmed me up considerably! The real mystery was why that architect divorced her for that other chick.

The reason why I like columbo episodes is all the side stories were really quality. In this episode Columbo having to do all the leg work with submitting the building permit and all the queuing showed a far less glamorous side of his role. They didn’t have to do it but a great touch.
