After exploring the Bible’s perspective on slavery, how do you think understanding God’s heart for freedom and equality can shape our response to injustice today?

Thank you so much for breaking this down so well. We often talk about the issue of slavery without translating, contextualizing, or even just reading what the actual text says. You articulated this so clearly. God bless

[Comment's correction 1]
People outside the common knowledge of the Christian Faith and it's history tend to confuse the slavery system allowed in the Old Testament with the slavery of the 1800's. However, doing a complete inspection of the protocols, laws, rights, and prohibitions of the slavery system, YHVH instaurated, the picture changes way too drastically:

- Kidnapping people is forbidden. (Exodus 21:16)
- Killing slaves is forbidden: (Exodus 21:20-21)
- If a master makes a serious injury to a slave, the slave is free to go and the master is legally forced to compensate him for the injury: (Exodus 21:26-27)
- Hebrew slaves (Who usually sold themselves willingly) were entitled to be free after six years of service: (Exodus 21:2)
- Foreign slaves *had the right to quit in case their master was abusive:* (Deuteronomy 23:15-16)
- Slaves are entitled to supplies and payment when they are freed: (Deuteronomy 15:12-14)

These are some examples. If we combine these protocols and laws with the fact that the majority of slaves in ancient Israel sold themselves (willingly) to owners to pay debts, the system of servitude looks more like a primitive prototype of a laboral system compared to the classic slavery we are acostumed to see in other cultures and nations.

As the history nerd here, I'd also like to address a verse in Exodus I've seen a lot of people use against Christianity recently and that's 21:7 which also touches on the issue of women. That verse reads: "[7] “When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go out as the male slaves do." Sounds pretty awful, right?

But historical and textual evidence say otherwise. In the ancient Near East, since there was no such thing as a safety net(be thankful to God for the benefits of modernity) there was a practice where poor families would often sell their daughters into slavery to be the wife of a more well-off man, in order to raise money to survive. This verse and the following verses when read into that context, are about protecting women who are forced into this situation. Verse 7 is saying that the woman has more rights than a mere slave, the owner can't just kick her out onto the streets to fend for herself. Verses 8-10 which I won't write here for the purpose of brevity, are all about how the master must not treat her as a lowly concubine, he must let her be returned to her family if she doesn't please him(as he chose her) and he is barred from selling her to foreign cultures(i.e. to non-Israelites.) If he takes another wife, he must still treat her as his wife(i.e. giving her food, clothes, shelter, and her rights as his wife.) If he bought her to be the wife of his son, he must treat her as his own daughter. And if he fails to meet these requirements, she must be set free.

I feel like our modern society is treating slavery as more like propaganda than history people of every age, skin color and both genders were enslaved. Africans weren’t the only ones enslaved in America. Native Americans were slavers and slaves too and while seemingly controversial I believe it happened, and that is the English enslaved the Irish in America.

I actually had a debate about this with some friends last night, stemming off our debate about if lbgt is right. One of them kept saying that the bible is wrong about somethings and outdated. Another friend also was bringing up how the bible could be interpreted different ways, and i shouldn't take everything at face value, when I did point out that while certain passages and verses say things, you should not take it out of context. This whole thing made me really mad, as the first friend was also saying that I have no base for my belief in God. After we stopped our debate, i prayed for him and my other athiest friends. It is frustrating when people you are close to try to use your faith aginst you, but remeber, God will help you find your voice in battles like that. Never think for a second that God has abandoned you, because he hasn't. He is with you in fights that try to disprove Him.
