Pure, unadulterated valuable information in no more time than needed, instead of making long videos for the almighty algorithm. Streaky might just be the master we need, but certainly not the one we deserve

That is the type of no waffle, no nonsense, expert advice everyone is after. Pure gold Mr Streaky.

You can also print instrument tracks or freeze them or commit to them...at least in pro tools but I‘m sure, any other DAW offers a similar option.

Speaking about CPU load, I have a question about oversampling: Not all plugins offer oversampling so on my mix bus or mastering bus, if my last plugin has oversampling, will that take care of everything that comes before it?

My biggest issue is Asio time overload in cubase especially with Ozone 10

Great tip; that's a very standard tracking and mixing protocol.

Just to flesh out Streaky's thought (hope you don't mind):

When you're tracking, especially vocals, you want the smallest buffer possible that your system can handle (your system may not be able to handle a buffer of 32, 64, 128, or 256; it depends on how many effects you're using, how many vsti's you're running, how many tracks you're playing back, and how much ram and cpu power you have). A smaller buffer avoids a delay between the playback of your music and the real-time vocal or instrument you're tracking so that you can hear yourself instantly with the music when you're monitoring (you DO monitor on the recording playback side, not the input... RIGHT?). The problem is IT WILL stutter or stop if it's too small for the amount of power your session demands, . If so, just set it one step higher and try again (buffer sizes: 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096).

When you're mixing you don't need that same immediacy of monitoring against something being recorded in real-time, you need PLAYBACK POWER. So you just set your buffer for as large as you can stand (the larger it is, the longer the delay before playback starts). That gives you a lot more power to do a lot more effects, edits, and automation.

ALSO:

many DAW's allow for "Freezing" tracks. If you have limited CPU power it can be a lifesaver. "Freezing" is really just rendering down a track (whether audio or vsti midi) in place, complete with the effects on the insert bus, and then bypassing the original audio, effects, and vst's in one easy button press. It lets you hear your track the way you want it to be heard, without taking the processing power to do it in real time. Then, if you need to make a change, you just "undo" the freeze and make your change, and freeze it back.

Warning tho: "unfreezing" tracks puts that processing power back on your CPU, so if you have a lot going on and you need to make a change to a track that's going to pull a lot of processing power, it may fail to playback unless you turn off something else in your session.

Lastly: DON'T FORGET to disable antivirus, VPN's, remote software, backup software, etc... running in the background before you start work. It steals CPU power from your DAW. Good luck.

Back to you, Streaky.

What about latency...? Den why people spending money on audio interface for lower buffer size?

Why am I getting threads running at almost 90% while single core load is less than 15% in Logic on a M1 Air / 8core/ 16RAM?

Why do you change the buffer size to the lowest when recording?

I am always amazed at how many users don't know this!!!! ;o)

Streaky what I would do want to know is your approach to multi-band compression using waves LMB during mastering. I feel that I loose subtle stereo feel almost like it tightens to the point where maybe it sounds more forward but pulls something from the side. I don’t like that. Correct me or guide me pls.

I like the format and love your content in general i'm an avid follower but this one may have been a little rushed given that you also recommended the lower buffer size for recording, I believe there's a little bit more that can be said on the topic.
I think you would have been able to mention in under a minute the relationship with latency like this you can equip the viewer with the knowledge that they ought to remember that you don't always need to operate your system with the lowest buffersize aka lowest latency, they may adjust to find the sweet spot in their current application . Latency vs CPU balance scale, maybe its easier said than done though ^_^

Does the lowest seeting not lag it out tho? I'm trying to record over my mix but I put it close to low and it looks like it's going to crash
