Perfect Laptop for UX and Product Design?

It's not surprising that UX and product designers are obsessed with their tools. A question I get asked more often than you'd expect is about picking the tool of tools - a laptop to do the user research and design work. What's not surprising is the number of variables you must consider when making a decision: Mac vs PC, UX design tools and apps, hardware spec and performance, budgets... and many more. In this video, I'll cover exactly that.

🙌 If you like this video, you'll definitely like what comes next;

🚀. I started this channel in 2018 to upskill my design team on user experience methods, rapid UX prototyping, service design, and more at a scale. Gladly the material I use is also relevant for other people across the globe (like yourself).

I work on a 13" MackBook Pro M1, 16GB of RAM, 500GB storage. I run Figma, Miro, Teams, Notion, Chrome with multiple tabs, Slack, Outlook and other apps and works really great!

I currently have 3 systems: my laptop is a core I5 10500H with a RTX 3060, and my desktop is core I9 9900k and RTX 2080 Ti (both with a slight overcloak). I also own a 7 year old Macbook Pro with a core I7 and GTX 650 and it still runs really well, updated it with more RAM and a SSD hard drive. I can honestly say Apple is great for creating while PC is great for building. I don't know how to explain it very well, but I like the feel of certain apps on Mac when creating videos, photos, or any design work runs really well. But for some reason PC runs stuff like game engines so much better to me, especially with a NVidia GPU able to run Ray Tracing. I guess it does depend on your work load.

Any thoughts on the upcoming Surface Laptop Studio? I'm intrigued by the idea of having one device that can function both as a laptop and a table of sorts

As a beginner UX/UI designer, I typically work with 4-5 files in Figma and have up to 100 tabs open in Chrome. I'm considering purchasing the MBA M2 8/256 within my budget. Can I expect it to handle my workload smoothly? Your input is highly appreciated.

It's crazy how you did not recommend AMD Ryzen, but I will give you benefit of doubt because they are out of stock everytime. My rig has 5900x, 64GB and 3080 for my work and I play games sometimes, I barely touch my work laptop, only if I have to use sensitive information. Also I found out, Once you used to experience Figma in 144hz+ monitor in Windows, I don't think you can go back to Mac anymore.

Product design doesn’t need a robust computer. As long as you have decent GPU and 16gb ram your solid.

Great Video, I've got a Lenovo IdeaPad S340 with 8gb of ram and with a 1 tb hard disk and 256 SSD. Got it for college work 2 years before I knew about ux, it is very handy but the problem is that Adobe XD sometimes freezes or crashes alot, it is really frustrating, planning for a Mac setup later in the future, should see how M1X chip works out.

Did you just recommend only using Intel I9 processors. You're pockets must be deep.

I use a Macbook Air with M1 Chip. My daily software usage is as follows in the descending order of maximum usage:
1. Figma
2. XD
3. Sketch
4. Illustrator
5. Photoshop
6. Premiere Pro
7. After Effects
8. Logic Pro

At a given point of time often, I have Figma and Illustrator or photoshop open, and it runs super smoothly. Another aspect I like about Macs is the color accuracy. It really helps when working with colors. I also work in a coworking space and like to travel light from my home to office. I just carry my macbook. The trackpad is amazing and I never miss using a mouse.

There are times, when I have forgotten my macbook charger at home and have almost survived 5-6 hours of medium usage without the battery running out and still maintaining the performance. (a lot of windows laptop dial down the hardware performance if not connected to a power cable). So yes, after this experience, I have never missed my windows laptop or PC.

PS: I still dream of having a sexy gaming PC setup.

I have an m1 Mac mini 16g. Aobde and Figma work perfect; photoshop works great too but crashed twice over an 8 month period.

Have never subscribed to a channel so quickly! This video is what I have been looking for.

Not sure which one to get
M2 mac mini pro base version - more cores with 16gb RAM or
M2 mac mini upgraded - less cores with 24gb ram.

if I take the M2 it will be 8 core CPU, 10 core GPU and 24GB ram. Can't afford the 32GB RAM upgrade in the M2 Pro. Would multiple cores aid the 16GB RAM and would that be enough?

Use case Figma, Illustrator and Photoshop for professional day to day use. After effects - occasional. May dabble into 3D later.
