Red Rock House by Faulkner Architects is a striking residence located in the Las Vegas desert, balancing modern design with the rugged beauty of its surroundings. Situated on a three-quarter-acre plot, the house offers views of both the Las Vegas Strip and Red Rock Canyon, while withstanding harsh conditions like intense heat, strong winds, and monsoon rains. The design uses a subtractive approach, creating a protected courtyard and an elevated water basin that mirrors the living area, adding visual depth and symbolizing the delicate relationship with water in the arid environment. Concrete walls and floors, made from locally sourced sand and gravel, reflect the natural hues of the nearby mountains, while more than half of the home’s structure lies below ground for insulation and energy efficiency. The upper level, screened by perforated weathering steel, provides both shade and privacy, and a solar array along with high-efficiency systems reinforce the home’s sustainability. With its earthy materials and harmony with the desert landscape, Red Rock House serves as a testament to thoughtful architecture that respects and elevates its natural environment.
