Malcolm Young wasn't just one of the founding members of the legendary rock band AC/DC, he was also the band's leader. From their earliest days as a small Australian cult band with lead singer Bon Scott, to their time as the biggest, baddest, and loudest rock band in the world with lead singer Brian Johnson, Malcolm Young was behind the scenes directing it all, while also playing rhythm guitar alongside his brother, lead guitarist Angus Young.

Tragically, though, Malcolm Young passed away in 2017 from dementia at the age of 64. But the mastermind behind music like "Back in Black" and "Thunderstruck" left an unmatched legacy. Here's a look at what the last 12 months of Malcolm Young's life were like.

I always loved Malcolm because he was the silent genius behind AC/DC. He never demanded the spotlight but his signature gyration always made him stand out in his own way. I miss that guy.

I got to see AC/DC three times. I can vividly remember Malcolm standing in one place jamming out while his brother Angus was all over the place. R.I.P. Malcolm you gave us badass music and memories.

Malcom was the Backbone, the Silent partner. Always behind or just out of shot in any of their pictures. His Co lyrics and Rythmic Anthems will never be equalled. RIP X.

I lost a grandfather to Alzheimers and my dad has been in the early stages of dementia for about 20 years. So Malcolm's death hit me hard. I also met the band a couple of times and he a very sweet guy. What a tremendous loss.

This band is the epitome of perseverance. Since Bon's passing and all that has transpired since, they remain a testimony to rock n'roll. They have won the battles.
God bless AC/DC with devil horns! Hell yeah!!

I've been a hardcore AC/DC fan since I was 11 years old (now 46) From going to the first show Monsters of Rock (Gentofte '91) Dressed in my homemade (mom-made) schoolboy uniform. To the point of having a huge tattoo of their logo on my underarm. AC/DC has been in my life for so long and mean the world to me. The loss of Malcolm was hard, even more so as he died on my birthday. So needless to say, that day is not so happy for me anymore. Thank you so much for it all Malcolm and especially for "Down Payment Blues" 😢

I touched Malcoln's shoe once when i was up by the stage in 1979 in Dayton Ohio. He smiled and said hi to me. I loved him and them and it broke my soul when he died

The men of AC/DC are all brothers to me. They are my family. I know that sounds stupid but I don't care. We have laughed and loved and raised hell together, through their music, for almost five decades now and they just keep coming with the magic. Thank you, my brothers, here and gone, but never forgotten. For those about to rock, we appreciate you. AC/DC Forever.

When I saw them in concert, he stood out the most. Couldn't take my eyes off of him.

My step dad died of Lewy Body dementia. He seemed to barely come around when I was around too, but not long after he died. I was in tears by the end of this.
