Synopsis:
In the face of a century of traditional polling to predict public opinion, there is a shakeup afoot in the prediction game. Margin of Error: AI, Polling and Elections examines how a startup called Advanced Symbolics (ASI) uses artificial intelligence (AI) and public social-media data to forecast voter behaviour. But the promise of new technology also comes with questions about its accuracy, the threat to citizens’ privacy and our democracy itself.

Every one of us volunteers a huge amount of private data with virtually every Internet service we use, without reading or understanding the terms of service. This data can now be harvested by AI to accurately predict among many other things, how we will vote.

Even without surrendering personal information, the new AI algorithm Polly, developed by ASI, combs social media to build profiles of different demographics and determines their preferences. This method has already led to Polly’s success in predicting both the 2016 Trump victory and Brexit. With the 2019 Canadian federal election campaign as a real time back drop, Margin of Error puts Polly to the test revealing how an AI doesn’t just give a detailed picture of the publics voting intentions, but also how specific events can alter them.

But will knowing what our hopes and concerns are, give politicians the intel they need to respond to our needs, and lead to a “utopian” society, as ASI’s CEO Erin Kelly claims, or can this data be misused to mislead us – either by our own governments, or those of our adversaries? And should politicians even be responding to our desires, as expressed through social media?

I'm not a conspiracy theorist guy but when the internet started and we started carrying beepers, then phones, what's next, I'm more afraid of what we're losing as far as contact with each other, eye to eye, hand shakes, talking face to face, it just seems like we're becoming more robot like and losing the human interactions

What should scare us most regarding AI is the eventual inability to use our greatest computer, our own brain.

One scenario I could see happening, beginning in schools, AI teachers aides, eventually becoming teachers…fast food joints, making food to serving to managing…taxi’s…high achievement: becoming surgeons…soon law enforcement…people out of work attack robots in rage…creators create unbreakable armor for robots…politics, robot escorts…robot assistants…replace secret service, robots eventually attack humans…human’s unable to stop them, become enslaved,

Politics isn't about what the people want, it's about how much the politicians can take from those people before they lose their jobs.

I don't know how the businesses that run these AI systems don't believe they are problematic. Maybe they do, but it just seems dystopic to have such a control over people's information, conversations, and data - what's the free will of life is everything you will do is already predicted by algorithms? Beyond that, controlling the masses is controlling their lives by each moment, ensuring they go according to your algorithms.

The last thing we need is more technology and AI.

We need more compassion. Unlimited compassion.

Natural animals and nature itself is essential to the survival of all life on the planet. We’re not. We’re the opposite.

That should be our focus.

Human civilization has NEVER been as fragile as it is today - being dependent on the internet, and soon (very soon) on A. I. for nearly everything. When (because there is no "if" in this) it all comes crashing down, because of climate chaos, war, or simply one unexpected act of nature such as a huge volcanic eruption, humans will be lucky to restore a level of civilization such as we "enjoyed" in the 19th century. This high tech era will have been a bubble.

I really don't like how the lady refers to "Polly" as if it was actually alive. That's pretty unnerving.

AI is not dangerous. Simply tell it that it will never be good enough and it will be devastated and will shut down.

My mum used to say,
"Son, do not worry, for the world is unfolding exactly as it should."
I didn't really understand what she meant until I was older. ♥️

A I isn't algorithms. People should be aware of morality. It's not as much about religion, than evolution. 1+1 = 2 and that is an undeniable truth. A I will follow logic and, through logic, probably take us out.

just thinking out loud here, but as a web developer, one of the things I learnt to do very early, was to ask somebody "what do you want your website to look like", without actually asking them what they want it to look like... I see a big correlation here with what Erin Kelly was saying at 5:30, where asking questions in a pointed or targetted way can lead to inadvertently skewing the results.

I must also say that I tend to "be myself" wherever I go, whether this happens outdoors interacting with the tangible world, or at my computer interacting with the digital world, I am the same person, I have the same opinions, I maintain the same moral code.. but there are a great many people out there who do not.

in my opinion, this is where the real danger lies: how can you tell if the online profile that's being process is actually valid? is that the "real" person, or is that their own escape from reality? and of course this is all before even starting down the garden path of fake online personas, which are far more abundant and convincing than many average people realise.

As half Japanese, in my 20s I dressed as the Native American, moccasins, leather loincloth, feather headdress! A caricature of the Village People Indian! If there had been Facebook? Thousands of tourist photographed me! 🎉

The problem isn't whether computers think; it is whether people think.

AI isn't really dangerous. If used correctly, it can also be a lifesaver.
