⚠💻 Watch this video if you can't copy, delete, open files on your external hard drive…
When I try to copy a folder with many other folders within to an external on Windows, I get the following error 👇
Error 0x800701E: You could get this error when copying files to another drive or simply when you try to open a file.
Error 0x800701E: The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error. Device = External Hard Drive. Hence, it means there's something wrong (fatal error) with the hard drive.

Windows managed to copy a few files. Can't even delete the folder that was partially copied! You don't need to scan this drive. It's a very misleading message! It's a fatal error because Windows is unable to scan the drive! You only would get the "Scan and repair drive" option after Scanning the drive first. You shouldn't use the drive when Windows is scanning it. In your case, after clicking on "Scan and repair drive", your drive might get fixed. But, if your drive is still not fixed, then continue watching for other solutions. Test whether your existing files inside that drive are working! One of the causes that could've damaged the hard drive is when you unplug the drive without safely ejecting it first. Physically unplug the external hard drive. Wait a few minutes. If your external hard drive is connected to an external power source, then unplug the power cable too. Connect back the external hard drive. Good news, you might be able to again open the files that had an error. IMPORTANT: This is not the final solution, please continue watching to 100% repair your hard drive. Again, this misleading message! This time, Windows was able to scan the drive! NOTE: Don't use your computer while Windows tries to fix the drive. Depending on the extend of the error, drive capacity, used space, etc., it might take a while. It took me less than 5 minutes.
If in your case, Windows is still unable to fix your drive, then jump to 5:50 , where I'd share a few more tips to try. Test 1: open a few files. Test 2: Delete the folder that was partially copied. Test 3: copy the same folder that caused the error. Checking that all the files are copied. Test 4: open the copied files.
Remove the drive and leave it unplugged for few minutes. Plug into another USB port.
