When You Refuse to Use Resources in an RPG

The problem is not needing them later, the problem is using them, still losing, and then feeling bad you used them.

I've been hoarding potions in our D&D campaign. I got the amulet of the drunkard, and bought an alchemist's jug for free booze (and effectively a free once-per-day heal), and also lucked out finding a platinum scarf. We also have a dope cleric who's been hitting my echo knight fighter with heals, so haven't really needed potions.

So we get to this part where we're pretty fucked up from a crazy battle against about a dozen trolls and half a dozen giants, and the DM is like, "As you look across the carnage, a rumble is felt in the ground, and shouting coming from deeper in the caves as more enemies approach. You have maybe 10-15 minutes to prepare."

Suddenly, everyone is like, "Cleric! We need heals!" but the Cleric is like, "I'm out of spell slots; the only ones I have left are for emergency resurrections!"

Then I'm all, "Well, well, well... step right up, and gaze upon my wares!" And I show them the 20 healing potions, 12 greater healing potions, and 4 superior healing potions I had been saving and buying whenever I could.

I charged them half price, and we all healed up. I got an earful after the 2nd battle, but I was like, "Y'all been spending gold on stupid RP shit like extravagant living conditions and hookers. Don't get mad at me for being prepared!"

It actually fit my character, who was once an adult gold dragon who turned evil, and did such horrible things that Bahamut punished him by cursing him to a lower form, a black dragonborn (I chose black, because few things are resistant to acid damage). He's been on a redemption arc ever since, but he still has a compulsion to hoard things. He also has no interest in the appetites of the flesh (too focused on winning back Bahamut's favor), nor wishes to live in extravagance, as he'd rather rough it and keep the gold. So when they got annoyed with my potion hoarding, I was like, "It's 100% within my character's character to hoard."

Games are so much more enjoyable once you start using all the tools and resources the game gives you.

Literally in any game with buff items, I only use them if my Inventory is full and I know I get a new one after using one. 😂

Then there's me, where I finally convince myself to stick a gem in a legendary pair of boots that I just met the level requirement for only to get a WAY better set of boots the next level.

Thats why ive always been a fan of cool downs over resources, but easily craftable resources works too

I've had several moments where I was like "you know what, yea, imma use it now. There'll prolly be more later". I did need them later, and I found none.
