CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Mr. Stevens (Anthony Hopkins) continues to maintain a dignified distance from Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson), even after she informs him that she is getting married.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Filmed with the usual meticulous attention to period and detail of films from Ismail Merchant and James Ivory, The Remains of the Day is based on a novel by Kazuo Ishiguro. Anthony Hopkins plays Stevens, the "perfect" butler to a prosperous British household of the 1930s. He is so unswervingly devoted to serving his master, a well-meaning but callow British lord (James Fox), that he shuts himself off from all emotions and familial relationships. New housekeeper Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson) tries to warm him up and awaken his humanity. But when duty calls, Stevens won't even attend his own dying father's last moments on earth. The butler also refuses to acknowledge the fact that his master is showing signs of pro-Nazi sentiments. Disillusioned by Hitler's duplicity, the master dies an embittered man, and only then does Stevens come to realize how his own silence has helped bring about this sad situation. Years later, regretting his lost opportunities in life, he tries once more to make contact with Miss Kenton, the only person who'd ever cared enough to seek out the human being inside the butler's cold veneer.

She is being cruel to him when she says that she and her boyfriend laugh at him because she is trying to gauge a reaction from is so hurt that she has just informed him that she is going to get married and he hardly seems to course what she doesn't realize is that his heart is breaking but he will not allow himself to show his true is as if he is unable to show his emotions and this was something that was very much part of the English character at that period in stiff upper lip.
A masterpiece of a film that is haunting, heartbreaking and tragic.

It's like she just wants to get a reaction from him - even a negative one. His guarded indifference is unbearable for her.

I actually think this is one of the best films of all time. Very unique.

She is trying to provoke a reaction, any kind of emotional reaction. This is not going to work. She should have just taken the chance and frankly told him how she felt and asked him if he was interested in pursuing it. That, at least, would have been decipherable to him.

1:06 - 1:12 I think this the best delivery I will ever seen in my life.
I stopped counting how many times I've repeated this line.

She's so subtle. Noting his idiosyncrasy. You have to love someone to perceive that.

That's acting of the highest order,
Had it been any other year, at the academy, ( Without Schindlers List) then this would have been Anthony's second oscar.

Just unfortunate timing, but mesmerising acting.

this movie is so sad and frustating, but yet so beautiful.

One of my favorite movies, of all times. It was definitely a strong undercurrent and tugged at my heart strings. Unrequited love and such things always make a good story line. They each did a tremendous job of acting the part.

Dear Emma Thompson, how about you just tell Anthony you love him and we all stop being frustrated ?
I know this isn't the subject of the movie... but this movie devastates me.

If I recall the film correctly Stevens is trying to manage a big social event upstairs that is going disastrously for his boss. So he comes downstairs for a few moments and is immediately met with Miss Kenton laying this trip on him. To me it just emphasized at that moment how completely and utterly alone Stevens is. He’s only trying to do his job to the best of his ability and it all seems to be unraveling.

When he sais twice : " Did you have a pleasent evening ?" I understand this like jealousy. it's a tinny little reaction :/

That melody is the most dramatic one I have ever heard.

The detail she remembers of him and his quirks like pinching his nose.. Arghhhh this is why I didn't like taking this book as one of my A level texts... It's so frustrating. I couldn't read through the other book by the same author, never let me go, because it was so gut wrenching that I needed to stop.

Mr. Stevens has to be the most frustrating male character ever written.

I like his lack of a reaction to the provocation. I'm in that kind of situation all the time but I get too emotional. Wish I could be like this gentleman.
