CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Congressman Lewis ("Christopher Reeve":) stuns Lord Darlington ("James Fox":) and his guests when he tells them that they are all amateurs in international affairs.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Filmed with the usual meticulous attention to period and detail of films from Ismail Merchant and James Ivory, The Remains of the Day is based on a novel by Kazuo Ishiguro. Anthony Hopkins plays Stevens, the "perfect" butler to a prosperous British household of the 1930s. He is so unswervingly devoted to serving his master, a well-meaning but callow British lord (James Fox), that he shuts himself off from all emotions and familial relationships. New housekeeper Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson) tries to warm him up and awaken his humanity. But when duty calls, Stevens won't even attend his own dying father's last moments on earth. The butler also refuses to acknowledge the fact that his master is showing signs of pro-Nazi sentiments. Disillusioned by Hitler's duplicity, the master dies an embittered man, and only then does Stevens come to realize how his own silence has helped bring about this sad situation. Years later, regretting his lost opportunities in life, he tries once more to make contact with Miss Kenton, the only person who'd ever cared enough to seek out the human being inside the butler's cold veneer.

I'm glad Christopher Reeve did this role because he showed how truly great an actor he could be.

Chris Reeve had extensive dramatics training and higher education, not that that’s necessary for every actor. But he was dedicated and proud of his profession, and it showed. He was that rare combination of old-Hollywood good looks and talent.

One of the best movies ever. I have watched the outtakes and wish they all had been included in the final cut. Anthony Hopkins was just superb! No miscasting here...all great performances...from Irma and Elsa to Lord Darlington... to the man running the pub and all the servants . The relationship between the Stevens’, (father and son) one of Peter Vaughn’s last performances...was particularly moving.

Christopher Reeve's character is an enigma because he reproaches the British upper classes for their outdated system and yet yearns to be one of them which explains his eventual purchase of Darlington Hall.

I have always loved this film. So many characters, so many differing points of view, and such wonderful acting.

I genuinely love this scene. The way the American ambassador argues that the British lords and their form of gentlemen politics is outdated as proper politics rises. Best thing is just how polite their argument is. Not like social media and certain recent events.

Chris absolutely loved this part, but always lamented how it did nothing for his career, which was already in decline back then.

Christopher tapped James Ivory and said that all he wanted was to do one scene in any of his movies.

I think this was Chris's best performance ever.

They're probably doing their best. They also have centuries of history to follow. Maybe they cannot take many steps outside their intended path before they tire.

I saw this film and was enthralled by the underlying tension or passion ? between Miss Kenton and Mr Stevens, but mostly by it's charm and a glimpse into a world when there was a class divide but everyone was for won't of a better term, "content in their role in society". What I really wanted to say was that the film was adapted from a book of the same name and this is where I had a moment to think. The book's author is Kazuo Ishiguro, a Japanese writer who moved to the UK when he was young; and as the saying goes "the book is so much better then the film" and that is deserved high praise. The book and film are at the apex of both art forms. Brilliant.Truly lovely.

Superman was his breakout film, but a slew of schlocks in the 80s caused him to fall off the map a bit. This movie was supposed to lead to a comeback a few years later, but his injury got in the way.
RIP Superman

Lord Darlington is how I imagined him to be; rather restrained. Not very confident of himself. He seems so nervous.

"Professional politician" is not a term that should inspire confidence.
