This man's voice is so impressively solemn and calming. He could talk about anything and sound like a world-class lecturer.

Biggest advice I've learned for myself too.

Serve the song.

Yeah, too many musicians are too into themselves, rather than the music. Instead of playing what's called-for by the song, they play either what they think might make them sound good or they play "their thing". I don't know how many times I've seen the band call out a bassist, drummer, or lead guitarist for getting off-song, only for the musician to say "Leave me alone, I'm just doing my thing."

It's not a contest. It's not an exhibition of your skills. It's a song. Play. The. Song.

To sum up what Carol Kaye told me during my Skype lesson: No other instrument affects the sound or mood of a song, like the bass.

His career is a living proof of what he is saying. He knows how to be on the top of the jazz scene then hold back all his harmony and technique knowledge while playing with The Rolling Stones.

Best advice ever! Thanks Scott!

I think it s really important this point of view. Even if You can play amazing stuff with your bass, you never forget The bass's role into the composition, and the First think You have to mind it's to be the support of groove, rhytmic and harmonic

This is facts...regardless of the instrument being played.

Okay so basically: “when you are doing a thing, try to do the right thing that works with that thing that you are doing.”
Got it.
