Joshua Graham | Fallout Lore

This video will discuss Joshua Graham aka The Mormon Missionary, The Malpais Legate and The Burned Man. Enjoy!

In the remnants of Ogden, Utah, now known as New Canaan, a town inhabited predominantly by Mormons, a child was born, that boy was Joshua Gram. Joshua was a child genius, who easily understood and interpreted languages like it was second nature, by the time he was a young man he was already fluent in several languages, so it was only natural that those above him made him a missionary and gave him his sacred duty – to go out into the wasteland and spread the good word, translating it for those who otherwise wouldn’t understand. We don’t know how many years he did this for, but we do know he was away at the time when The Followers of the Apocalypse arrived in New Canaan, two men named Bill Calhoun and Edward Sallow, along with seven others whose names are not mentioned. These Followers were looking for someone to join them on their expedition into The Grand Canyon, to help them in their task of learning the dialects of the tribes that called the canyon home. Naturally Joshua was chosen and was soon heading for Arizona, following The Long 15 and 89 South towards The Grand Canyon, where he met The Followers of The Apocalypse.

You're a good neighbor to us. We all go through periods of darkness. In such times, we can turn to the Lord, but it's good to have friends.

The voice actor for Joshua did such an excellent job on the character.

Joshua Graham is one of those characters that could easily have a stand-alone show, film, or book written about him.

Probably one of the greatest characters in Fallout lore. At least a top 5. And to think.... He's only in a short DLC. What a great arc and not to mention really good voice acting too

He's got to be one of the best video game character designs I know, you could easily base a show or movie on Graham alone. Not that they should, sometimes it's better to leave things be and not over-explore and milk everything to death. Still, one of the most memorable characters in Fallout's history.

Can we all take a moment to recognize how much of a physical monster Joshua must've been before being burned

Joshua is probably one of my top 3 favorite characters in the game story and writing wise

I love the Terrifying Presence perk in NV. But Graham has an even more terrifying quote, which lends itself mostly due to his history:
“There are many reasons why that would be a bad idea. I will illuminate three.
First, do not believe that because Daniel is a missionary, he is incapable or unwilling to defend himself.
Second, If you harm Daniel or any of the Sorrows or Dead Horses, I will find you. Make no mistake. God willing, you will not leave this valley.
Lastly, waging war on good people is bad for the soul. This may not seem important to you now, but it’s the most important thing I’ve said.”

the complexity of the fallout story along with smaller, more inconsequential, but still impactful, side stories really just knock me off my feet every time. i can't get over the beauty worked into this game.

I live in Salt Lake City, Utah, and have for a while. I'm not a Mormon, or even a particularly religious person, but I see and know and interact with many of the people of the city through my job.

I certainly subscribed to the general perception of Mormons for a while, but meeting Joshua Graham in New Vegas gave me new context for what a religious person can look and act like.

I think that's peak writing.

The Legion's use of three waves (Recruits, Primes, Veterans) is based on the Roman Republic's Maniple system, where the Hastati, Principes and Triarii were classed based on experience and would advance in that order

My soul can finally rest at peace. Thank you Syn. I know its been almost a year since I last asked for this, but I never gave up hope.

It's pretty crazy that Joshua is around 50-60 by time we meet him and he still is crazy in combat.

Doesn't matter how much lore videos about him existed, his story always fascinates me over and over again.

Joshua Graham and Randall Clark are some of the best characters in the fallout series.

Most videos on Joshua don’t go in depth about the defeat at Hoover dam, so I found that information quite interesting. Well done as always Syn!

Every time I play this game I like to slowly build up the legend of Joshua. Starting slowly at first. Reading stuff about him.

Then I do dead money.

Then upon returning to the mojave I like to do a few more minor quests before i go to camp golf and hear the chief's story of The Burned Man before i do honest hearts.

The foreshadowing of Graham like this always gets my blood running for the meeting. I love it.

Oddly enough, it’s probably the fact he didn’t scream on the way down that saved his life. Inhaling and screaming damage the throat and lungs when burning, so he survived with massive external damage, but internally was fine.
