You can either have eye contact or my undivided attention, but you can’t have both 😂

One time in my math class I was done with work so I could be on my phone; the girls at my table were gossiping and were worried I’d hear them in spite of my ear buds—one of the girls assured them I was totally zoned out. They talked about some kinda messed up shit. I heard every word. My brain was on about 85% listening and 15% playing subway surfers or something (once you reach the typical 1 mil in distance, your eyes can kinda glaze over without having to really focus). Although ironically, because of my ADHD, I may have heard and understood everything, but in the grand scheme of things (especially with the panic and stress of high school), the memory of what they actually said is completely lost to me. Can’t retain memories that I don’t have use for and/or don’t have any emotional attachment to when I’m in such an anxiety-driven environment. Thank god I graduated this year lol

My husband and kids do this. It took a bit to get used to it, but after having this explained to me about this, I stopped trying to get them to look at me when I speak.

I need all these tips…my son’s teachers accuse him of not participating but he is focusing intensely.

Took me years to realize my wife wasn't ignoring me or uninterested in what I was saying. After reading about adhd I understand her better and our relationship has improved.

As soon as you try to listen to them, you can't listen to them anymore.

This is 100% me. I find it difficult to keep eye contact with someone cause I get distracted from things around them, and most of the times I forgot what the person says to me. Does this mean I got bits of ADHD? Let me know 😊

Yes and No....? Can't speak for others but for me it is that I'm looking around.

It is not that I am not staring in your eyes but instead that I'm not staring at anything. If I'm staring at something I'm probably not listening!

Is this common? Don't know. Never been keen at stearing people's eyes.

Just purely based on evolutionary biology that’s a sign of weakness in a person if a person requires more concentration to maintain eye contact
