My mother (87) saw the first trains (they existed they just weren't everywhere) and when they came to her little town, people thought if you'd ride one of those you'd die "because the speed would kill you" (never mind that you could run next to it and go faster but...) and women were absolutely not allowed on trains for the longest time because 'it would make them unable to have children'... on and on.
