Transgender Athletes: Former NCAA DI Swimmer Discusses Competing Against Lia Thomas

Should transgender athletes be allowed to compete with those of the gender they identify with or must they only compete with athletes who share the gender they were assigned at birth? Are laws that ban transgender women from participating in women's sports fair? LGBTQ+ activists have described criteria limiting transgender athlete involvement in gendered sports as "discriminatory.” Lia Thomas made headline news and stirred debate when she competed in swimming nationals as a transgender woman. Dr. Phil, along with Layne Ingram, a transgender man and basketball coach, and Olympic swimmer Nancy Hogshead-Makar, an advocate for girls and women in sports and CEO of Champion Women, discuss what they believe is right and fair. Then, Riley Gaines, who competed against Lia Thomas, gives her perspective on how she felt after their race. The big question is: what does the science say? Harvard professor Dr. Carole Hooven breaks it down. (21005RR)

I completely agree with Riley males are physically stronger, so of course, it is an unfair advantage. I have no problem with transgender people at all, but in this case it's very unfair. Everyone is calling Riley she was almost attacked for saying how she feels. She was cheated.

As a transgender man, I do not think transwomen should be allowed to compete in professional sports in the women's division. Biologically, they're male. The same way I am biologically female. In sports the biological factor is too big to ignore, and I actually think having a pool for transgender women would be better, but then again there will likely not be enough of them to make that happen.

It sucks for transgender people to do it this way, but that's just the reality of our lives

If you don't see the issue, YOURE the issue. Nothing to do with discrimination it's great people can be who they want to be, this is about safety and equality. If you're born in the wrong body, you cannot disregard the PHYSICAL traits that give you benefits over the people who were lucky to be born in the right body. It's just unfair, it sucks for the trans athlete too. But they should have their own league, it's be decently popular in this era.

Just give transgenders their own bracket. Transgenders vs transgender
Men vs men
Women vs women

How is allowed to happen? I have two daughters who competed in collegiate sporting events, and the thought of them having to had to endure this type of a situation infuriates me!!!

Why don't transgender people just have their own sports events? To me, it would make it more easier. Just saying❤❤😊😊.

No one who agrees with Riley has a problem with transgender people. We are saying you CANNOT ignore the biological differences even if you identify as a female. You were still born male therefore have those advantages over those who were born female. We are not attempting to invalidate you, we are not trying to say you aren’t real women. I’ll be the first the fight for the rights of the LBGTQ community. We are just asking you to FACE THE FACTS.

Male and female Olympics, special Olympics way not a trans Olympics. Maybe someday. We women are still fighting for basic things. Now we are back burnerd again. It's unfair if u haven't fought the female fight.

I swam. Would've NEVER wanted to have to compete against the males on our team. Ridiculous!!! I feel very bad for women athletes having to deal with this. Felt the same when we faced East German female swimmers.

Have sports regularity organization lifted banning rules in using steroid in sports arena? I think it is times to give back medals to once who considered cheaters or ban the regularity organization which bends the rules for fame and name.

I was a mid level track runner in highschool a couple years ago, not the best not the worst if I switched to girls track I would have been competing for state championship probably close to winning so tell me how that’s fair

There needs to be a category for trans athletes. Everyone benefits from athletics and everyone should have a fair and level playing field. We are not talking about trans men and we should be because there is little chance of their being competitive against biological males but there would be a more level playing field for trans men and women competing against each other. If something is not done there will not be any biological females playing in competitive sports because mediocre males will be taking their places.

WHY DONT WOMEN SPEAK IF EVERY WOMEN ATHELETE SPEAKS OUT AGAINST TRANS MEN COMPETING IN WOMEN'S SPORTS. IT WILL BE SHUT DOWN. WHY ARE THE WOMEN SILENT? WE MEN WHO SUPPORT WOMEN SPORTS ARE GETTING TOLD THAT YOU GIRLS ARE OKAY WITH IT THATS WHY YOURE NOT SPEAKING OUT :@

If everyone’s so worried about unfair advantages in sports, I guess you all support trans kids having access to hormones and puberty blockers, right? To even the playing field in that exceedingly rare situation where a transgender person who represents less than 1% of the population also becomes an elite athlete? Right? People are so worked up about a “situation” that is not even a thing. The odds of your kid or you, yourself being beat out in sports at the elite level (or even the couch potato level) by a trans athlete? If **delusion** were a sport, we’d deplete the world’s gold handing out medals.

I laugh at this comment section. The thing is, I understand a bit where people who are against trans women competing with Cis Women in sports are coming from.

However, it seems like you guys are not really looking for a solution to attempt to meet in the middle. You go for the easiest and most discriminatory option available.

Hormones (Estrogen) reduces the muscle to the point where is similar if not smaller than some Cis Women. What many of you see, it’s more the outside. “The skeleton” and yes, Trans women can build muscle just like cis women, but by having a bigger skeleton it’s gonna look more muscly than it actually is.

Now, if you still want to argue that biology plays a factor. Why not give cis women a head-start. Give them an extra 3 seconds. Add some extra weight, whatever, you get the picture. People can come up with trial and error dynamics, so trans women are not excluded and or discriminated and can still compete with other women. But looks like to me, that people rather mask their true intentions and want the right of being able to say, “no matter how hard you try, you don’t belong here” and I could be wrong, it could not even be as “ominous” as this. It could be as simple as pure laziness or lack of analytical skills, but what I’m trying to say is, look for solutions people. Instead of spreading miss-information that aligns with your beliefs. “Evolve or repeat” if you preach kindness and compassion seek the approach that reflects that. Just my 2 cents.

Regardless of which side you choose, I wish you a lovely day filled with peace, love and light. 🙏🏻✨

Trans women belong in women's sports.

The idea that they're taking away opportunities is seriously the silliest argument I've ever heard. Imagine going up to a person you're jealous of and being like "This is mine now!!" or whining that you didn't get what you wanted. That's literally what it's like.
