The Human History: 200 000 Years of Accelerating Growth

I document that throughout the 200 000 years of human history the pace of development of our civilization has been accelerating. Each of the past five technological revolutions put development in another gear, operating through two channels: accelerating growth in the existing dimensions, and generating completely new dimensions of development, in which growth was suddenly an order of magnitude faster than growth in previous dimensions.

In hunter-gatherer times human population grew at a rate 0.002% per annum, doubling every 35 000 years. Today global GDP doubles every 20 years, and data communication - every 2-3 years. This tremendous acceleration has been due to a sequence of technological breakthroughs increasing our capacity to harness energy and to process and accumulate information.
