I have a fairly new minelab and the second time i used it i found a couple bits of gold in the old dry blower workings in less than an hour at Tibooburra. That was just beginners luck, most locations you will just find endless old nails, bullet casings, pellets, bits of wire etc. I am looking forward to using it in remote parts of the Pilbara where there will be far less trash to deal with!

i'm also a minelab guy (aussie brand) and came to many of the same conclusions haha! Detecting is a hobby that you can throw HOURS and HOURS into, with very little reward. But, when you do find something, it's rewarding and addictive.

Lots of fun, but don't expect to strike gold straight away :)

I metal detected for a number of years in the US, mostly in Houston, TX. I quickly found that I did not enjoy digging in hardened gumbo clay so I spent my time in playgrounds. I have found gold, silver, fired and unfired ammo, crack paraphernalia, paper money, toys and other items. It is great exercise and you never know what you will find. I bought a used gold detector but never found any gold.
Trips do not have to be metal detecting only. I would bring my metal detectors along on any long distance trip. If I was going to pan for gold I would also try detecting, if we stopped at a park with a playground I would detect it. I took it on fishing trips to see what I could find at the boat ramp. The beach has been my least successful location as it is heavily hunted.
