2 years ago, we got to attend the Audi Q4 E-Tron First Drive event in Oceanside, California. Now we live there and we got to spend a week in their 2024 mid-year refresh and take it on allll the same roads. It's peppier, zippier, and more efficient than the O.G. but still with all the classic Audi vibes.

You've been on a roll! This Audi has the same range as my EV, but costs quite a bit more.

Great overview. That said, so glad I went with an Volvo C40 a year ago instead of an Audi, which has a similar size, cost, and look (fast back). Didn't realize all things I would miss that I love in our Volvo. For example, one pedal drive set to your fob/profile (no need to turn it on each time), profiles for two users, Google Maps, clear display amd simple clean nav (getting an improved update this year by OTA too), 0 to 60 in 4.5 secs, only two stocks instead of Audi's old school 3 stocks, and a small frunk. I do like Audi's physical climate contols. Wheels on my C40 also look better and all have disk brakes.

Thanks Liv and Patrick! Great review. One thing I'll say in defense of drum brakes is that they require much less maintenance than disk brakes. For an EV that rarely uses friction brakes, it prevents the need to do maintenance that would be required on disk brakes with exposed rotors.

Thank you Patrick and Liv. I looked at this model. It is a nice vehicle, but seemed a lot like the VW ID4, without the tax rebate. I ended up buying a Mach E premium, which costs much less and has comparable features. It also does not qualify for the tax rebate, but Ford has some great rebates and financing at 0%.

The Prestige Q4 has the augmented reality HUD. Was hoping you were able to try it out!

Lovely review, as always! I wonder if you've thought about rebranding your channel, or starting a new one for non MachE content? Maybe it's not an issue, but i think you've grown big enough and i love the broadening of focus, so i hope the current channel name doesn't hold you back (especially in terms of getting review cars from other automakers)

I actually own a MY22 Q4 50 e-tron quattro in Canada now 2.5yrs in with the car. To tell the truth, I actually tested the C40 Recharge, ID.4 Pro S 4motion, Model Y LR AWD and the Mach-E Premium AWD. The Volvo was ruled out early on as they didn't have inventory, the ID.4 drove great but the interior felt overly cheap, the Model Y was just bad (rides like crap, loud road noise, rattles in nearly new demo + I don't like Musk).

It came down to the Mach-E Premium and the Q4 e-tron, but back in 2022 in Canada the Mach-E Premium were around ~$75k CAD and Ford dealers in Ontario all MARKED UP their inventory due to the COVID shortage. Meanwhile, Audi not only discounted the vehicle down to ~$68k and being I had an Audi prior also dropped the interest rate by 2.5%. To be honest I liked the Mach-E drive more, but for $7k less for an Audi and it being a fully loaded Technik (or Prestige trim in US markets), it was hard to argue against.

Today in 2024, Ford has dropped prices significantly on the Mach-E (you can get a GT Performance AWD for $75k CAD and get discounts) while Audi significantly raised theirs (an equivalent Q4 55 e=tron quattro Prestige will set you back $87k CAD) and I wouldn't have even considered the Q4.

That said, I'm quite happy with my Q4 for the past 2 years. This was my first BEV and while the range is middling (my older 50 e-tron quattro gets ~400km on a full charge) it drives great, quite comfortable and does everything I have asked for. Reliability has been solid with only 1 recall outside of annual service. I get a lot of compliments on the car from family and friends, and it has costed pennies to run even in comparison to my cousin's Hyundai Tucson hybrid.

I have a friend with a 21 Q5 plug in hybrid and I much prefer his instrument cluster, climate controls and infotainment controls. I don’t like the looks of the touch controls on the steering wheel and the touch control volume over a regular volume knob seems like form over function. I like that it has some actual switches for the climate controls. The sport back shape looks cool but gray does nothing for me on a car. Mostly I don’t think Audi is bringing any excitement here.

This EV does nothing exceptional. I’m not impressed with range, acceleration, efficiency, charging speed, one pedal driving, brakes, comfort, styling, etc. It won’t take marketshare from any other brand. It’s for Audi lovers only. Sorry for my pessimism
