Catalonia will hold regional elections Thursday, two months after separatist campaigners tried to declare independence from Madrid following a disputed referendum. Many leaders of the secessionist movement have been arrested – prompting comparisons among some supporters to the actions of former Spanish dictator General Francisco Franco. As Henry Ridgwell reports from Barcelona, history plays a key role in the Catalan independence movement.

Stop comparing the current position with the Franco era. That is absurd. Catalans are not oppressed, persecuted or dominated, for goodness sake. At the free and democratic elections last.Thursday the party that received most votes and won most seats is against independence. In addition the anti-independence parties won more votes, by about 170, 000 than those that are pro-independence. The parliamentary arithmetic means those in favour of independence are more likely to be able to form a government as they have 70 seats to 65. Nevertheless the votes show that the majority of Catalans, at the moment, don't want independence. If anyone is 'manipulating' democracy it is Puigdemont. Either way, what the election most clearly shows is that Cataluna is basically split 50/50. Ask yourself if it is better for a government to seek compromise and conciliation against that background, or radical change. Any sensible democrat would give a clear response to that question. The problem is that Puigdemont is NOT really a democrat (except when it suits him) he is a zealot and a fanatic.
