I do this all summer long. I buy one basil plant from the nursery. Weather permitting I plant it outside. As it grows I cut a stem of it off just below a node. Then I put in a glass of water I do not use a bag. Within a week or so the basil has rooted, and I plant it outside again. I do this every couple of weeks. Right now I have a large container of beautiful basil, which only cost me $3.88 for original plant.  Looking forward to making a lot of pesto, and using the leaves in all kinds of recipes.

Tricks to keep perishables fresh ought to be taught in grade school. Your tips on asparagus were fantastic! Thanks for this, Jerry. You've definitely saved me a few bucks on regular occasion.

This method will work well only if the basil is freshly harvested from the plant. New roots may even sprout from the stem. However, the basil that I purchased from the market is imported and in a bundle. The basil will wither very fast using the method that you have recommended. The better option is to blanch, refresh in an ice bath, squeeze dry and keep in the freezer.

Should you wash the basil and dry it before putting it in the jar and covering with the bag? Thanks!

It's unbelievable how much yield you can get from one basil plant all summer long once you learn how to prune them. In the past we'd get the dreaded white flowers and they'd go straight to shit. Now we have so much basil from one plant we don't know what to do with it all.

I tried this method for Thai basil but it wilted a tiny bit the next day. Is it the temperature? I live in Hong Kong where it's now 30C in the afternoon and 28C at night.

Mine turned black within 2 days :( I cut the stems, put it in water in a glass, covered with plastic bag. Any ideas how to fix? Does it have to do with how hot or cold it is inside the home?

Nice tip! Is there any reason that you can think of that you couldn't use a bell jar, instead of a supermarket bag? It's not a huge investment, and you'd have a terrarium to admire in your kitchen, rather than a plastic bag!
