Is Putting Luck or Skill? | Golf

Luck or skill, what’s your thoughts?

With speed and start line more consistent than with a putter, the variables still meant that one of these missed. This demonstrates how tricky putting can be, and as your skill increases, it becomes a very testing mental aspect of the game.
My advice would be to build an approach where you focus on rolling the putt down your chosen line at chosen speed with no care of the consequence. Let the variables play out and see what the day gives you.

The first two putts were for bogie the last one was for birdie, at least that's how it works for me.

Dr. Malcolm's explanation of chaos theory in jurassic park comes to mind. Tiny imperfections and alterations in the grass create a butterfly effect in the balls path

Well it's probably skill with a bit of luck. Your skill tilts the odds in your favor.

Core of the ball could be slight off center.

The first 2 balls where released slightly above the start line, the last ball was released slightly under the line .

It’s called a change in potential energy since for the first 2 your hand was higher up than the last one even though you might not have noticed it

It's due to the grain of the green. After several balls pass over the line of the putt it reacts differently.

I mean, you also have to account for the fact that the ball rolling across the green changes the surface of the green. So each time you roll a putt over the same line, the ball is being affected by the changes caused by the prior ball. So if the direction of the grain is altered in any way by the prior ball, that’s going to affect the next ball fairly significantly.

Pretty easy to understand really. The ball can be off even slightly when dropped (heighth of drop and/or location in the metal contraption in which it slides down), how it hits the bottom metal contraption could also slightly take it off the correct path to go in. Certainly some luck with those drops as the speed, location, etc. can vary even if a fraction of an inch or speed is slightly off could produce a different result.

David Pels book shows how to find the heavy side of a golf ball. This is done by a small glass of water and add salt until the golf ball floats. Spin the floating ball until it stops. Then pull the ball out of the glass of salty water. Mark the bottom of the golf ball with a black marker. This indicates the heavy side. Now roll the golf ball at different places of the black marker. In a 10 foot distance the ball will move up to an 1 inch. That will make your puts more accurate by placing the heavy side of the golf ball opposite of the break in the green. Thank you

You didn't drop it at exactly the same height as the first two.
The last one was dropped slightly lower than the others

The two balls dropped before could have changed the directions the grad was directed at causing the last ball to fall behind or path to get hindered

It got more windy on the last drop big difference in the trees

Grass, wind and hand release is not a perfect system either.

Indoor with controlled environment, higher percentage for 🕳 ⛳️

The wind. Look at the trees on the third one. Also could be which finger left the ball last adding the slightest spin.

I think it takes skill to read the greens and get speed right. However, there is some luck involved with sinking a putt

My putting has gotten exponentially better this year just drinking less and trying to read the green so yeah, both?

Wind is a factor as well. You can tell In the background it’s pretty windy there. And on the third ball the wind blowing harder.

The third ball is dropped slightly lower (about 1cm) if you look, so carries less speed.

Not only does the grass count for change of direction from the previous route of the first 2balls the initial letting go of the ball creates different spin therefore slight difference in every single shot makes a big difference.
