Can Dogs Tell When They Are Dying? How Can You Know?

We all wish dogs could live forever, and boy, do they deserve to.

But sadly, there comes a time when our pets grow old, and life becomes too difficult for them.

Sometimes, our dogs will let us know that they are ready with certain behaviors, looks and actions.

Which begs the question; does a dog know when they’re dying?

Thank you for sharing. My loyal amazing dog of ten years who was declining faster than I realized, decided to climb over a spot of our fence that was falling down and that we thought we had secured, (we also thought with his back legs being a mess that he couldn’t get over) and he just left the back yard and then got hit by a car. It was so out of character for him. We rushed him as fast as we could to a vet, but his injuries were insane. While on pain meds and we were comforting him and saying our final words he went from his calm to suddenly lifting his head and giving me this intense wide eyed look and stared into my eyes with a tear coming down, and it felt like he was telling me that he was leaving me and that he was sorry. I held his head and wept while they put him down, whispering that I wouldn’t leave him. He was there for me for so many intense events and not having him here has made a huge hole in my heart.

My beautiful good boy, Bleú had all these symptoms when he passed on 20th day of January 2023. I never left his side for 48 hours and told him it was ‘ok to go’, the tears streaming as he took his last breaths. The silence was deafening, not hearing those paws on the wood flooring. It gets a little easier but I miss him every day. Rest in plush my Boogie Bleú Berry muffin 💙 the absolute bestest friend ever!

I can not think about the day Shadow will be ready to leave me. But your video showed beautifully how our dogs do give us signs when they are ready. For me, my Lab showed me when she started to let go in the house. She was always so ashamed, with her head down, and being off her food and water. To let go of a friend like that is allowing them to die with dignity.

My dog is 15 1/2 years old. She's tired, feeble, disoriented. Last night she refused to come back into the house. I brought her in. Today, same thing. So i decided to let her sleep in the yard today, in the shade, water there for her. I think she's wanting to die outside. (Elephant graveyard, Tarzan movies-- yes, i think some animals sense it coming, and want to be in a certain place of peacefulness and quiet.) I'll miss her.
