Autism & Society - *Employment* Accommodations at Work

How do you help autistic workers to be happier & unlock their potential? A follow on to our report "Making Autism Work" - here we look at accommodations for neurodivergent workers (from a mainly autistic perspective) and the benefits they can hold for both workers and employers.
The potential of neurodivergence in modern business has been largely overlooked, yet there is a wealth of talent just waiting to be put to good use. Employers must think slightly differently if they wish to benefit from the advantages they can gain by bringing novel thought processes into the fold.

This is all good in theory. But in America, where the law doesn't matter when it comes to protecting workers or the "little guy, " these special accommodations are viewed as nothing more than an added effort and expense, and it's something they can avoid by hiring a "normal" person. They get to dance around it with other laws, which suddenly matter and get enforced when it comes to protecting corporations and their profits.

This didn't hit on my biggest problem. New supervisors coming in and changing everything. If change is necessary to get a job done, I can handle it. But, arbitrary changes to boost the ego of a new supervisor sends me into meltdowns and burnout. It's the #1reason I quit jobs.

Excellent. I am currently unemployed, but I have faced all these nightmare scenarios in the past, shattering my confidence and self-esteem. I am finding these videos helpful in my quest to become a better self advocate. I am not at all social and I am better at writing than I am at speaking. A lot of misunderstandings between me and employers/back to work "helpers. The positivity approach, the enforced group sessions - especially "team building" certainly do make the majority of neurodiverse employees miserable. I am not great at masking and I am easily misjudged as a result. I am glad your channel exists. Thank you.

I have been the subject of and witness to middle management choosing people they don’t want in their ‘team’. Regardless of performance. They will bully, belittle, destroy this subject till they leave or they’re so demoralized the job suffers and they are let go.

The comments about rethinking the structures - or validity and/or topic success - made me imagine a campus-wide meeting in the theater hall ...with a moshpit. For stimming. And it was good.

I had a bday like this at work but I was the one who got all the gifts, cards, cakes, treats and flowers from staff and patrons- at first it was great but only a week later I felt bad because someone eles on our team didn't even get breakfast (which was common place for bdays at the office) my card and gift was the only thing they got. I felt bad for them.

Having ASD isn't east. However the only way to deal with it is to figure out was works and what doesn't. Another receipe for success is to make a list of all of your skills and talents and look at this list everyday to erase any doubt you have about yourself. Reading inspirational novel s or books about others who struggled help let you know that you are not alone. This is what help me overcome my disability fears. Lastly looking toward the future is the key to moving on in life.

GREAT INFORMATION/ GREAT PRESENTATION. Thank You, I am going to share this with my management here in the USA.
After 17 years with my current career option, I have recently been clinically diagnosed ADHD & Autistim. I’ve always known it was “something” I just didn’t know it was clinical. I am absolutely ND, and I want/ need to stop the lifelong/ career long masking. I am age 53, and so sick of the production to fit into NT norms (career/ social/ family/ etc). I feel like a double agent and it’s so nice when I can just me the real me.

Thank you for this information.
I need guidance- My boss has been told numerous times that I learn differently.
I need to be able to ask questions to confirm policies. Especially if they are new policies or new task I've not encountered prior.
When I ask straight forward questions that simply require a "yes" or "no" answer. They tell me I've nor read my resources when I have.
My boss went so far as to say it is not their responsibility to make sure I understand. The way they write their "how to" emails talk in circles it makes it very hard to really know exactly what is being said.
I feel alone and don't know what to say to them.

I have not been diagnosed but I suspect I am either autistic or have a personality disorder or both, I work for a huge bank in there corporate office and the place is huge with lots of people 🤔 I suspect I have this issue because every job I have had I have been ostracized and bullied, and this is what is happening to me now unfortunately..I always ❤️ what I do at these jobs and do great with the metrics but I normally end up leaving because off being ostracized and bullied, I can't afford this, now this job due to the pandemic let people work from home I was wondering would this be something that could be a job accommodation for someone with autism or a personality disorder

For the myriad complaints I have against the company I work for, I will admit their training is actually very good. There's online stuff to read, video tutorials, and 1-1 training, so all the main learning methods are covered. Thankfully, meetings are few and far between, and my manager hates them as much as I do, so when they do come up, they're brief and to the point.

Sadly none of this is useful when the majority of us either can't get a job, or can only ever get a job that absolutely will not do any of this

Hmmm. For quite a few years now, my employer has actually refused to accommodate me in a number of ways and even made fun of me for asking.

In my next meeting I'm just gonna tell them straight up that they broke the law.

2:32 I’m so sorry if this is a bit rude, but my own autism is acting up and I cannot help but notice that your head has a bit of a pointed bump on the top of it and I’m very curious again sorry if you find this rude at all

Why would a company buy entirely new lights in their store to cater to a autistic employee?
