Back muscles: Anatomy of serratus #shorts

Показать описание
Are you neglecting these muscles? The serratus anterior are often the serratus muscles that get all the attention because 1) you can actually see them and 2) they are an important muscle for shoulder function. They also help with breathing when the shoulder blade is not moving...
However, I would argue that the serratus posterior (inferior and superior) are also very important. These two muscle are often "tight" on people when they first learn to do something like a Thoracic CAR (we posted that a couple of weeks ago).
This tightness indicates that these are motions that many people do not do with their torso.
The serratus posterior superior lifts the ribs and helps with inhalation.
The serratus posterior inferior helps with forced exhalation as well as extension (backward) and rotation of the upper body.
Ribcage expansion and mobility is incredibly important not only to increase our breath capacity, but to help us with shoulder mobility and bracing for lifting.
Do you actually need to try and "target" these muscles? Not really. It is best to work on exercises involving breath as well as middle back rotation, flexion and extension. There are a lot out there. The Thoracic CAR mentioned above is a great example of a movement that covers all possible movements of the thoracic spine and includes breathwork. The post is titled "#1 Mobility Exercise for Middle Back" on our feed.
