I’m 4th generation Japanese-American from Hawaii. Although it may be anecdotal and not based on data, there seems to be a lot of Japanese girls settling down and marrying local guys. They are called “shin-issei” and make up a new wave of immigration.

Many originally come on student visas to study English. My brother married Nihonjin and have a nice family. My sister in law says Japanese people generally feel more comfortable in Hawaii (compared to continental US) because of the large number of Japanese-Asian-pacific Islander people that share similar culture and values.

Even though I am 4 generations removed and cannot speak Japanese fluently, I still am heavily influenced by Japanese culture.

2021 was the pandemic year, so this could be a reason why the number is low, people just couldn’t come over and meet people and marry. Heck, my brother met a Japanese girl online and they have this long distance relationship for like 3 years and they will meet in person for the first time on 11 October (yes, the date of opening)..

I went to Taiwan 5 years ago and my impression was like a Chinese-speaking Japan. Yes, I found them that close.

Hmm, so Japanese women and men have in common that they choose partners from Korea, China and Brazil. But where the men tend to choose an Asian partner (Philippines and Thailand), the women opt for a partner from an English speaking country (UK and US).

So how about the divorce rates for foreign partners and the reason for divorce?

I checked again on which us actually closer to Japan: Hawai'i or Alaska. Sure enough, as I thought, Attu Island, the westernmost island of the Near Islands of Alaska is much closer to Japan than Hawai'i. Attu Island is has also been uninhabited since World War II when the US retook it from the Japanese invasion of various Pacific islands during the war. I learned something new. 😎

Would be interesting to know, what the divorce rates are with mixed couples from these countries. I once saw a statistic that japanese married to someone from UK or the US have a lower divorce rate than japanese married to japanese. Highest divorce rate was with a partner from the Philippines, when I remember it correctly.

my grandfather was a GI in Okinawa after being shot he said his life was saved by an angel with the prettiest smile and eyes he had ever seen spent 2 years looking for my grandma after the war they were married for almost 62 years so yeah I would say japanese girls get married to foreigners lol

The Japanese language did not come from China. The Chinese characters (kanji) came from China, and many words came from Chinese through those characters, but the grammar is completely different. The closest language to Japanese is Korean, and that's the only language that is at least somewhat close.

I am surprised that Americans were higher than Chinese, too, but yeah, the military is probably the reason.

Interesting. Japanese ministry of health labour and welfare had Filipino grooms - Japanese brides as the fourth biggest parings at 265 marriages in 2019, more than UK's 233, but not as much as Korea, USA, China, and Brazil. Where did you get your 2021 stats if you dont mind me asking?
