Thanks for watching! The complete 3D character guide for games is coming on YouTube soon! In the meantime, check out the written version of the tutorial on my website:

If only retopolgizing a sculpted model was this easy ;_;

I would like to see more examples of the "wrong way" to show why good topology is beneficial. I often see examples of the "better way" and that doesn't make sense to a person trying to learn. It just appears lifelike and thats it. Showing how the mesh works in a broken state would explain a lot more about how the mesh works in a quick format. Not saying the tips are bad, just the presentation.

Sometimes making good edge loops is why I like box modeling over sculpting, but it would probably take forever for a box to turn into a AAA game character.

The dance that the character is doing😭

I'm sorry but the face base wiggle took half my life span away I laughed so hard 😭😭

i really appreciate that you showed a more basic version of the topology for the face!! whenever i look at those i have no idea where the hell to even begin, but now i think i have an idea for how to approach the next model i make :)

If the back of the knee has fewer loops than the front of the knee, you can end up with a knee that bends more naturally and doesn't have a tendency to bow inwards in unity. Likewise, having supporting loops around the sides of the elbows helps with twist bones in unity, too, as it gives the joint a little more flex!

Just realized how TERRIBLE my models are from this video 💀

Ik this seems like i need to touch grass but....the model is so pretty. >.<

just because its not all quads doesnt mean it not a good topo. its usual for games to optimize the topology to have tris and even ngons at some specific places to help with deformation and rigging.

quads may be better for deformation, but tris are more accurate at preserving detail.

and quads is also a visual thing too. in the end of the day all quads are just 2 tris together.

Mid topology works in alot of scenarios, just a steep curve, bad is when you literally just hit ctrl + r in sculpt mode, mid is when you haphazardly make loops and connect them without a care as to how they connect later, and great takes hours of going over every surface extruding, and for beginners, watching 15 tutorials because there aren’t good guides

This is a little bit misleading. Quad topology isn't always the 'good' option for NPR models. You mentioned mouth loops but for anime-styled models it's just as if not more efficient to just use a series of tri's around the lips, since it will allow the mouth verts to connect directly to its 'frame' without having to take edge flow into account.

I use quad remesher for models i am not going to use again, otherwise i am still using it, but correcting a few elements of topology i dont like. It saved me lots of hours.

I learned 3D modeling a long time ago in 3DS Max, and up until this video I thought my skills are fully irrelevant today. Thank you!

If you can make such dance moves then you cane make a very good game 😂

Back in the early days of the cgi, some modelers would make their lives easier by taking a sculpture of what they want modeled and drawing lines all over them, so they can measure coordinates to put into the computer (which I guess is still kinda done today with 3D scans and motion capture)

Seeing the ridiculous amount of triangles was humbling for my first experiences 😅
