WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?

The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.

The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.

We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Being trans is not an existential claim.
It’s a question of identity. That’s it.

The man is putting things on the same level when that have absolutely no sense at all. He thinks "Hey, I´m a woman" and "Hey, God exist" is comparable. The right concepts to compare are "Hey, I´m a woman" and "Hey, I BELIEVE God exists" and in that particular case nobody has to think they´re lying

The caller seems to assume people will just dismiss god claims right out of the gate, when a lot of people wouldn't. If someone says 'I know God speaks to me at night' well cool, I am prepared to believe that person hears a voice at night and they are attributing that to God... you have anything in the way of proof that it is God? Otherwise it's just a cool story, bro.

I feel like a good point would be to say something like, "If someone tells me they're Christian I just believe them" The same way you believe how they identify.

That's not to say their Christian belief is factually true, but they do identify themself that way.

Twice during my life, I've run into people who self-identified as African-American and I've misidentified them. One of them in a rather embarrassing way for me because I was working the front desk in a hotel and commented that they looked black on their ID (it was a dark picture) implying they didn't look that way in real life. I didn't even think to tell them they were wrong or I didn't believe them and I wouldn't do the same thing to a transgender person. If someone says they are a girl, then as far as I care they are, I don't need to know how or why or the science of it or anything. People have the right to self-identify themselves.

With religious claims, we almost always accept that they experienced something, we just don't accept the claim about the real-world they're trying to make based on their interpretation of that.

For trans people, their experience is the claim (they have the experience of being the opposite gender from their assigned gender), so to accept their experience is to accept their claim.

We can get the testimony of a trans-person. I can introduce others to this trans-person. For god the best we have is the testimony of those who have communicated with god in an unsubstantiated manner.

4:25 I mean also, there's the case where a person may be testing out different identities to see what fits. It's not up to us to determine what is 'true' vs what the person is feeling, or if they're wrong about what they're feeling. What they're feeling is true for *them*; we lose nothing by accepting what they say.

I prefer the european gay Jesus (He/Him). He said "My rod and staff will comfort thee." "Open up and receive my grace".

We really should call out people for saying, "If I wake up one day and decide I want to be..." or something similar, soon as they say it.

The approach to trans subject seems to be the same as the approach to evolution. The only people really bothered by it are those who assume a conclusion counter to those who study the subject.

Gender is a subjective thing interior to a person (how they identify and feel inside) as well as being a subjective thing that is cultural. The problem is that the interior and cultural aspects of gender are in conflict- that people are seen as one thing and identify as another. A totally different category than the question of whether a God exists, which is a matter of objective fact.

Lili Elbe, birth name Einar Wegener, Einar also spelled Ejner, (born December 28, 1882, Vejle, Denmark—died September 13, 1931, Dresden, Germany), Danish painter who was assigned male at birth, experienced what is now called gender dysphoria, and underwent the world's first documented sex reassignment surgery. This shit is not new people. 1882, get over it already.

The atheist community in general seems really bad at answering this question. I have had similar questions as this caller and have found resolutions for myself but I don’t think at any point during this discussion the hosts addressed the philosophically substantive aspects of the question at all. It does a great disservice to them and trans community when valid questions are asked in good faith and just completely whiffed on.

Gender is a subjective social construct which has no prescriptive value. We are all individually unique [no two identical]. There are no absolute roles, actions or attitudes of any sex. Sex is biologically demostrable in 99% of humans. Everyone has feelings, which are often inaccurate & change without reason.

It's very simple, gender identity is an internal truth just like sadness or happiness, things like race or the existence of god are external truths, they're very different

Well straight away no one can show what a “god” is other than an emotional need. I can show you a person. We know there’s gay people and very feminine men, and very masculine women.

This guy is worried about how HE knows someone is trans or not, but isn’t concerned at all with whether a “god” exists and what it is.

I can just as easy say this dude is gay and then say “well how do I REALLY know that you aren’t”?

If a person with light skin says "I'm black" you should reply "no you aren't". Probably best to keep it in your mind. But the idea of "ok you are because you say" is INSANE.
