I think the smaller, less expensive drives exist so that Samsung can say the Gen 4 980 starts at $89.00. It's marketing.

Totally agree, the small drives make no sense at all. I want a 2tb one!

....And now a year-plus later the 2TB isn't just widely available, but can be found for just over $300 during holiday sales!! Wow!!

Honestly one of the things that is most important to me for my next PC build will be to prioritize storage space. Like if I don't have at least 4 tb of SSD storage then I've failed lol. I am tired of having to delete games to make room for new games. I just want to download them and not think about it for a while.

Here is one reason to use smaller NVMe storage as your boot drive, Win10 is an incredibly messy OS in terms of endlessly splashing updates all over the boot drive. You can fit it all safely into a 250 gig NVMe storage device and then store your user data on something else that is much larger without Windows making a mess of it.

This question is less why these drives exist, there is a use case for a high performance small capacity OS drives. The question is why does Samsung assumes it should be pricing such premiums on these smaller sized drives. It may take time for Gen 4 but we saw in Gen 3 NVME other makers (Silicon Power, XPG etc) undercut WD and Samsung with drives that provided equal performance to these premium brands. Did I still pay the premium for my builds? Yes, did I use Silicon Power to provide performance value for the rigs I sold? You bet!

Yes, I have a small m.2 for cheap and stores the OS only, also a large capacity mechanical drive for program files only. Total cost was well under $100.

Smaller drives are great for workstations that don't need local storage. But there are less expensive options out there with similar performance on small drives.

With the size of modern games now, I've been waiting for reasonably priced 4 or 8TB NVME drives. I don't even need the x4 drive. I'd happily buy a PCIE x3 8TB drive if it was a good price.

Wow! I just found this video but I've been saying the same thing since before the PS5 and Series X came out! This guy is so 100.
If Sony or Microsoft wanted to make the argument that the new "super fast" SSD's in their consoles were required for the games they still have no excuse for not putting in large multi terabyte storage drives to hold the games which could then be transferred to the faster drives to play from. It's kind of how all computers have always worked it's no different than loading into RAM.

Yea, I'm going gen 3 to get a decent 1tb drive at an affordable price.

980 Pro 2TB can be had for $280 today (cyber monday) really tempting to replace my 1TB 960 EVO with a 2TB 980

For small files, ALL SSDs are about the same speed. The real benefit from PCIe4 vs 3 is for large file transfers.

The company i last worked for did a hardware refresh and all of their nc pcs were 256 nvme drives and many of their users will barely use it

need the PCIE 4 NVME drives to develop the direct storage apps that makes the technology really useful, but they don't need full size drives.

I want some of those 30 TB SSDs so I never have to touch a hard drive again.

I have a 1TB 980Pro in hand. Waiting for the Ryzen 5900X and Big Navi to mount on an X570 mobo. Thanksgiving will have an all new meaning this year.
