Clicker Dog Training: STOP Leash Pulling!

This is an exercise that supplements the techniques that I have presented on this topic already. It is not by any means a conclusive, end-all solution to stop leash-pulling. However, after having worked through everything else mentioned in my other videos on teaching loose leash walking, I find that a lot of dogs learn very quickly with this approach that they must not pull if they want to continue the walk. It is important to note however, that using food as a reward after every 'roundabout' may cause some dogs to pull just so they can come around for a reward. Using food rewards occasionally should eliminate this problem.

"...we are being consistent when the dog thinks they are training us". Sage advice, my friend! I haven't heard that one before, but I totally agree.

the idea of thre environmental reward is exactly what I needed. I have been unsure about what to do when my dog becomes indifferent to food rewards - usually when in a new, super interesting, environment. this is very helpful. thanks for posting!

yo man, great videos, i've recently got a puppy and started training him to sit rewarding him with treats once he does, your videos really help a lot, i would like to tell you that you are one of the best youtubers that teaches how to actually train the dogs. you should make a DVD or something teaching everything and selling it. i would instantly buy it! if you already have one or are planning on making one please let me know :D

Thanks loads!!!!

Great video! Your videos are always so clear and informative. I taught my chihuahua with food at first though; moving forward is just not reinforcing enough for her most of the time. I love that you included teaching the dog in a distraction-free environment first. Green thumb!

Thank you so much for your videos.  You're the best!  We have a perfectly obedient German Shepherd and we owe it all to you.

Love your video and training methods, using them on our GSD puppy. 13 weeks old today and training very well, Thank you!

Sadly the comments made about this video are disgraceful. If you want to teach your dog to quit pulling on his leash, this video nails it. I work with dogs in shelters daily and this is the best way to train them to quit pulling. If some of you making these comments are so good at dog training, then why aren't they doing their own videos instead of looking at others?

My border collie x rescue used to pull quite a lot, which is very dangerous here due to icy roads! But after clipping the leash to the front of her harness she immediately stopped pulling!:D

@RiDogCentar Frustration is always a possibility in training when we withhold something the dog wants - but it can be avoided. In this case, I wouldn't attempt this exercise until I have fully exhausted the ideas I discuss on calm loose leash walking in two previous videos. I agree that sometimes it's a better idea to walk in the other direction, but we can't always do that :) Ideally the dog shouldn't be over-aroused when bringing this exercise to the table. Hope that makes sense!

@LouiseAndBaba Have you tried any of the other techniques I explain in my other videos? Like I mentioned in this video+description, this is a relatively advanced idea that will work with some dogs whose excitement level has already been somewhat lessened through several other exercises first. Please see those first if you haven't already.

This training vid is great! Additionally after going through the videos found at Daryl Arktrom’s website and understanding my dog’s behavior patterns I’m getting better at this every day!

then I make him wait and release him to the pole. If he lunges to get to the pole after being released i do it again. Now he rarely does it. Sometimes we have to come up with different things since every dog is different. Hunter still pulls when he hasn't been out for a day or hours and so we use Tab's door exercise which works wonders. Since you have a high energy dog I'd recommend running in circles for a little bit to get him tired out some. With time he'll relax and not pull so much. :)

Well my GSD/Timber Wolf mix isn't high energy but since he has wolf, he really loves to be out for long periods of time and it seems as though he'll never get sick of it. What i did when he did the exact thing for two first months of being home (rescued from shelter at three months and 65 plus lbs) was but a long lead and watch him closely and call him every once in a while. I found that he liked sniffing poles a lot so i turned it into a treat. If he pulls i stop and tell him to sit

My friend has a boxer/lab mix puppy of about little over 6-7 months old. She is a sweet dog but she loves to pull on that leash, and she's insanely strong thanks to that boxer half. She's also insanely hyper, thankfully she's very much food motivated so I'm gonna try some of this with her and my friend. :)

I would like to see this same demo done on dog that is not already leash trained. My dog does not respond to me stopping & trying to redirect them in a round about fashion.

I'm no Tag (he's awesome), but I would guess you could exercise him first with a bike rie or fetching or whatever with out trying to worry about all the pulling and stuff. Once your dog is worn out go home and try to train him. He will be extra hungry anyway, so probably a bit more receptive. Then once you've got that routine down, you can start training outside.

what would you suggest if the dog isnt pulling, but sitting and doesnt want to move forward?
