One thing everyone should know about MRE’s. They are extremely unaffordable.

It's a variety thing. Large selection of canned meats, sauces and vegetables, large selection of vacuum sealed dried pasta, nuts and spices, large selection of freeze dried product's, cases of MRE'S, and about 400 lbs of mylar bagged rice and beans.

Meals refuse to exit is what my military friends used to call them. Was during desert storm and they didn't have flavors like these

People tend to forget leisure in their preps. Have some books at home to pass free time, and maybe one book in your bug out bag. You wont be fighting for your life constantly. You'll need to recover energy too. Also a good idea to have a few pictures of good times with you. If you are alone, you'll become demoralized, at least with a pic or two of loved ones or good times, it can remind you why you're still fighting

My ex was a reservist. It was a toss up which caused the most deadly farts, the MREs or the gas hut.

You should come up with a MAP of all nuclear power plans and military bases so the average person knows where to stay away from

Going to say this before even watching. If you're going to be eating MREs you need to drink tons of water.

I am a retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant (E8/1972-1993) and I have a lot of experience with military logistics and dealing with MREs. The MRE cases have to be stored correctly as they are temperature sensitive and have a much more limited shelf life then the freeze dried stuff. Also compared to the freeze dried stuff they are MUCH more expensive. My recommendation to all you civilian preppers out there is to go with the freeze dried stuff and not purchase MREs unless you are willing to gamble that you will need them within a few short years.

Harvest Right. 3 years running. It's paid for itself when you figure the price of bought MRE'S and making your own. Again, 3 years plus. Thank you, Nate.

Before the shtf arrives, learn to fast for at least 3 days. Find out now what the advantages of fasting are. For our ancestors it was normal.

For those who can’t afford it, get beans and rice . Cheap.

Yes they have a shelf life of 10 to 15 years, and the US Army will have you eating them for another 10 to 15 years after that. I was eating Vietnam and Korean war era MRE / K rations in the late 90's. The old dark brown almost black bagged stuff that was packaged as they were still figuring it out.
The cracker and cheese was the best thing in them, the stuff that gets traded off now, was the best I could hope for in the ones I was issued. Of course the cooks who we in charge of transporting the MREs with their kit had already gone through and grabbed all the dehydrated fruit, candy, Kool-Aide, coffee, and cigarettes out of them before we ever saw them. A lot of the time the heater was missing as well. I can't tell you how many cold potato & ham, or potatoes ALL ROTTEN I had to choke down.

I will say I have had MREs that 10+ years old... not the knock off but real military MREs. As long as the package/flex can isn't comprised you should be ok...

MRE pro tip : in a bag - bug out or bug in situ, throw a couple of 100mg per tablet bottles of caffeine pills. 1 cup coffee = 100mg caffeine. It's not great, but it's cheap energy in an emergency. Source : U.S. ARMY SERE SCHOOL

One thing to warn about, the milkshakes went rancid in the MREs we had when in the Army. Given enough time, so did some of the Tabasco. Just beware when you use this stuff. I remember seeing people sick for a few days after drinking the milkshakes.
