A sperm granuloma is a small, pea-sized lump that can form at the site of a vasectomy. It typically appears days or weeks after the procedure. This lump is often felt above the testicles, towards the groin, and can occur on one or both sides.
During a vasectomy, the vas deferens, the tube that carries sperm from the testicles, is cut and sealed. This prevents sperm from reaching the semen. However, the testicles continue to produce sperm, which can accumulate in the scrotum. The body's immune system recognizes this as abnormal and forms a granuloma containing the sperm.
Sperm granulomas can be tender and uncomfortable, especially when touched or during certain activities. However, they usually resolve on their own without treatment.
If the granuloma is causing significant discomfort, over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen, naproxen, or acetaminophen can help alleviate pain. These medications should be taken for 10 to 14 days.
Sperm granulomas are a common occurrence after vasectomies. While they can be slightly bothersome, they typically do not pose any severe health risks and often disappear independently. If you experience discomfort, consulting with your healthcare provider can guide appropriate management.
