Historically the U.S. military would assign most of the planes of a type designed by a particular company nickname that matched a theme. For example, McDonnell aircraft were named after spirits- so Phantom, Banshee, and Demon.
Grumman had a history of building Navy fighters and traditionally named their planes after cats, such as Wildcat, Hellcat, Tigercat, Bearcat. Now Tomcat isn’t wasn’t just chosen at random as it could just as easily have been the Wildcat II or something else.
They named the F-14 in honor and recognition of Admiral Thomas F. Connolly who sacrificed his chances of getting his fourth star when he testified before congress in opposition to the Naval version of the General Dynamics F-111 being pushed by Secretary of Defense McNamara. Sadly, it also killed Admiral Connolly’s Navy career but it did open the door for Grumman to submit their proposal for the F-14, the best Naval fighter ever built in the opinion of many Naval aviators
