Why Is The F-14 Called Tomcat ? #shorts

#BeyondExplained

Historically the U.S. military would assign most of the planes of a type designed by a particular company nickname that matched a theme. For example, McDonnell aircraft were named after spirits- so Phantom, Banshee, and Demon.

Grumman had a history of building Navy fighters and traditionally named their planes after cats, such as Wildcat, Hellcat, Tigercat, Bearcat. Now Tomcat isn’t wasn’t just chosen at random as it could just as easily have been the Wildcat II or something else.

They named the F-14 in honor and recognition of Admiral Thomas F. Connolly who sacrificed his chances of getting his fourth star when he testified before congress in opposition to the Naval version of the General Dynamics F-111 being pushed by Secretary of Defense McNamara. Sadly, it also killed Admiral Connolly’s Navy career but it did open the door for Grumman to submit their proposal for the F-14, the best Naval fighter ever built in the opinion of many Naval aviators

McNamara set the US military back by decades with his foolish policies and was very vindictive to anyone who opposed ant of his goofy ideas.

The F14 Tomcat was a big sophisticated bird that can do anything! She served the U.S. Navy for over 30yrs. and so far not another bird was capable of out doing the Tomcat.

Not the first aircraft to be affected by dirty politics! Look into why the yb-49 never made it past test phase

Dude forgot about the McDonnell F-101 Voodoo. Not exactly a "spirit" though.

He also forgot about Chance Vought's practice of naming aircraft around a pirate/gentleman adventurer theme.
F-4U Corsair
F-6U Pirate
F-7U Cutlass
F-8 Crusader
A-7 Corsair II (although it was probably the 5th CV aircraft to be named Corsair)

Admiral Connolly was amazing man and family friend. He even won an Olympic Medal for rope climbing (yeah that used to be an event). His response to the Committee Chair's question "could we save the plane if re-engine it" ended his career. It was a long the line, " Mr. Chairman there isn't enough power in all chrisindom to make the plane fly right.". It cost him his fourth star. Grumman😅 however also had the help of Admiral Tom Walker, who ran Navair, so I think they had two Toms to name it after. That was a real public relations coup. Yes we named it after you Tom.

I think the F-111B gets a bad rap because everyone loves the Tomcat. Sure, it wasn’t a maneuverable fighter like the F-14, but it was efficient, stable behind the boat, fast, and it carried the F-14s otherwise signature AIM-54 Phoenixes. The F-111 in USAF service was excellent as a strike aircraft, which ended up being a deficiency of the F-14 during the GWOT, and as an electronic warfare aircraft. A capability which the navy could have used to supplement or replaced the EA-6. The F-111 really was a program that had potential, but got cut short before it could demonstrate its capabilities.

McNamara killed a lot more than just one admiral's career.

Seems like the navy wants and needs a modernized version of the tomcat.
